Spectrum's Modem Upgrade

In an email, Spectrum (fka Time Warner Cable) has informed me that "As part of our continued effort to give you the best service experience possible, we will be performing an upgrade to your modem. We will begin updates starting September 25, 2017."
Via chat, I checked with Spectrum support about this upgrade. Spectrum told me that because the modem is connected to their servers they must and can do the upgrade. Spectrum also says the upgrade will be free and will not harm the CM 500.
Should I trust Spectrum? Is there a need to protect the CM 500's firmware?
