Ok, but "a nighthawk router" is not a very detailed description of
anything. An actual model number would be more useful.

A cable has two ends, and some of this equipment has more than one
Ethernet port, making that description of what's connected to what less
specific than it might be.
So, the (unspecified) "a nighthawk router" is not yet involved?

Have you talked to your ISP? Many cable-TV ISPs need to be informed
of the MAC address of a cable modem(+router) which will be connected to
their system.

One end of the Ethernet cable is plugged into the sole Ethernet port on the back of the modem and the other end is plugged into our hp laptop Ethernet port.
We called our ISP and their solution was to unplug the power and plug it back in which obviously did nothing.
