nighthawk ac1900 R7000
I have an arris surfboard 6480 and I want to get the nighthawk ac1900 R7000.Does the nighthawk connect to my existing modem-router or is it seperate

You can connect the R7000 to the modem/router combo, however it's recommended to either,
Bridge the modem/router combo unit or if it can't be bridged fully, use it's DMZ for the R7000 router if your wanting to use the R7000 as the main hostrouter.
Best and recomended modems to use is a stand alone modem for use with external routers like the R7000. Having a modem/router combo unit with and external router can cause problems. The above items will help with this though.

The C7000 is a cable/modem/router. This would be a replacement for the SB6480.
