Nighthawk M1 (MR1100) and bad mobile ISP
Hello !
This is not a request for support, but rather an answer for those who might search for it.
I'm using the M1 with a french Sim card from "bandyou", and there is some drawbacks that I want to share to help people avoiding to lose time like I did.
The M1 is working perfectly with another mobile ISP, but with the one aforementioned, custom DNS do not work (because the ISP is forcing their own), and VPN on standard UDP port (1194) is not working either. I mean, you can connect to the VPN (that way it might lower you suspicions on a possible censorship...), but then you can't do anything with your connection because you always get a time out.
My best guess is that are listing all popular VPN ips, and are setting rules to set the speed to 0 for anything going through 1194/udp on those IPs.
So if you're using this ISP, don't worry, the M1 is working fine, that's just the mobile ISP that is really bad.
I'm sure of it because I've checked with another sim card from a different mobile ISP, and I don't have any of the problems above. 🙂
I hope this will help some of you (and it might be true with others mobile ISP in other country.)
Cheers !
ps : if you have some other examples of other bad mobile isp with similar restrictions, feal free to add them in this thread for future references (if netgear don't see that as problematic, but these are easily checked facts, not suppositions)
