Nighthawk M6 Pro MR6500 static client IP setup

Maybe I am going mad but I cant find where in the router to set a client device with a static IP tied to the client MAC address.  This is a fairly normal function of routers, so guessing it must be there, but I cant find it on the web interface or the devices touch screen.  Thanks in advance.

Re: Nighthawk M6 Pro MR6500 static client IP setup

To set up a static client IP for the Nighthawk M6 Pro MR6500, access the router's admin panel through a web browser. Navigate to the network settings and assign a specific IP address to the desired client device, ensuring it falls within the router's subnet. Remember to save the changes. By the way, the 8 ball pool aim is not related to the IP setup process.

Unfortunately not that easy those options don't exist in the menu system I have looked as you say under settings... and everywhere else. The firmware is v1.0 and looks hastily built with spelling mistakes included like "didagnostics". If you have a screenshot from  the same firmware would be helpful?

Re: Nighthawk M6 Pro MR6500 static client IP setup

Welcome to this expensive mobile router series without an extremely important feature.  This router does support Port Forwarding, but it does NOT have the feature to tie a device MAC address to an internal IP.  So the port forwarding will not work, how ridiculous.  This happened since M1 in 2017, and now is M6 pro and still going strong without this feature.

That is the reason i did not buy this series mobile router after M1; and every new model coming out the first thing i do is to check if internal reserved IP feature is available or not.  6 years have passed and yet the answer is NO.

There is a number of users asking about this feature in the community, and Netgear's reply is to talk to network provider to get a public IP bla bla... totally not understand the question we asked.  We only need internal IP reserved which has nothing to do with network provider.

Re: Nighthawk M6 Pro MR6500 static client IP setup

You should be able to communicate the MAC address of the device activating the IP Passthrough under the WebUI Advance Settings. If you are looking for the Reserved IP addresses table found in normal routers, the MR6500 doesn't have it. To setup the static address of the device you should do it by  changing the Adapter Settings in Windows (if the device is a Laptop)  or in the Connection settings of an IP Camera and then use Port forwarding, UPnP or DMZ, or P2P.

Note that the IP Passthrough will turn off the Wireless radio though.

The MR6500 is truly an expensive brick. In my case, I do get a Public Address from ATT but the Port Forwarding, DMZ, UPnP, and IP passthrough don't work and Netgear refuses to support it because it was manufactured for ATT.

So far I can only use it as a hot spot. 😠

Re: Nighthawk M6 Pro MR6500 static client IP setup

Yes indeed manually setting the IP address in each connected device will solve the port forwarding issue; but only if those devices are stationed at one place and not going to connect to other wifi.  For example a laptop, manually set the IP will work for this M6500 router; but the moment this laptop is brought to other places, the user needs to set the IP to auto again. When connect back to M6500, manually set the IP again... very annoying & troublesome.  That is why i did not mention setting the static ip on each connected device as an option earlier.

This M6500 has other versions/model for worldwide and not limited to ATT.  However none of them has IP reserved feature.

Re: Nighthawk M6 Pro MR6500 static client IP setup

I am using the M1 and as many others, need the option to set static IP for devices. Do you know if there are any similar mobile routers with static IP option?

Re: Nighthawk M6 Pro MR6500 static client IP setup

It is ashame this feature has not been exposed. It does limit the usefulness of the modem for port-forwarding capability.

To get around this problem I set the IP address on the machine I want to port-forward to. That prevents it getting a different IP address throught he DHCP service each time it connects. Then set the port forwarding to that IP address.
