Assign name to static IP address

further to this thread

http://forum1.netgear.com/showthread.php?t=96540

I've made my Pc 'stick' to a specified IP address - 192.168.0.103 and ive reserved it within netgear.

Hopefully i know in the next few days if its Ok - when i turn off / on my Pc & its the same IP.

Query 1 :- Ive googled the netgear forum, & other resources, but can't locate this next query as yet.

Is there a way to allocate http://bob to point to my IP address ?

i don't want the world wide web users to see my computer, only those within my wifi network.

Ps "bob" is just an example word - Something easy to remember.

Can this be done ?

Re: Assign name to static IP address

I am not sure if I undertand your concern correctly. You were trying to rename your PC to a different name and wants to access it via HTTP? The router will detect the name that you have configured on your computer. I am not sure how do you access it via HTTP.

Re: Assign name to static IP address

basically, I go on my IPAD.

I put the URL - WIN8 (the name of my computer), & it displays a GOOGLE search on "win8"

if i put http://WIN8 - nothing happens, the browser says it can't open the page.

(if i go to my PC & put http://WIN8 - my mini website shows up fine...)

If i go to the IPAD & put in http://192.168.0.103 - my mini website turns up fine & i can access the files....

I guess its not a big problem - but it should be possible to put http://(some name) & get my mini website

No worry, be happy

Re: Assign name to static IP address

So there's a webserver running on the pc?
if you want to access it from outside the network, then you'll have to put the external ip into the ipad. That or get a domain name and assign it your external ip and open port 80 on the router.

Re: Assign name to static IP address

The problem is one of "name resolution" - your ipad is unable to resolve the name of the PC to it's ip address, the reason it is not happening is because you have no name server on your network, the router does not provide name server services. The reason why it works on the PC is the PC is running Windows, and Windows uses NetBEUI to resolve names.
