What is your question? It depends what device you have(compatible device) and implicit or explicit setting required. This sort of things can be
learned by experimenting.

Maybe if it is rephrased like 'beam steering', would make more sense. You can steer radio wave(beam) using hardware or software(in this case firmware) Instead of me goining into detail, search on Youtube with keyword 'Netgear router and beamforming' Have fun, hope you have some -ac mode devices to get advantage of beamforming.

Then you have to download and run inSSIDer(V. 4 higher) or Acrylic to read the signal strength in numerical dbm. This utility is a MUST when you use wireless.
