D7000 modem/ router as router only

Hi, i currently has dsl but will be getting cable and buying a new modem. Will it be possible to use my existing D7000 as just a router if i connect a ethernet cable from the new modem into the red port labeled "Internet" on the D7000?

What settings will i have to change?

Is there a distance limit that the cable shouldn't go over?

Thanks

Firmware version?  ("red port" suggests that it's a D7000[v1], not a
D7000v2, but, if you find something else after "Model" on the product
label, feel free to reveal it.)

I'd expect so, but I've looked at the relevant User Manual.  You
could, too.  Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model
number, and look for Documentation.  Get the User Manual.  Read.  Look
for "Set Up the Modem Router for Cable or Fiber Service".

Should I know what your current settings are?  (Or your current ISP?
Or your current anything else?)

If your DSL service uses a PPPoA or PPPoE connection, then I'd expect
those settings not to apply with your new (also unspecified) cable ISP.

The smart move might be to do a settings reset on the D7000, and let
it try to configure itself automatically, starting with a clean slate.
Look for "Reset" in the User Manual.

The usual limit for twisted-pair Ethernet is 100m.
