D7800 cant pick up ADSL dsl light stays amber

So I spend 6x the amount of my previous router to buy the D7800 router and.... nothin. I have spent all day trying to get the expensive piece of rubbish to work.

I have tried updating firmware bought cables to replace (9 of them now, just in case). Still nothing. I unplug the cable from the expensive piece of rubbish D7800 and stick it into the back of my old ASUS... et voila.. internet connection. Plug it back into the D7800... Nothing zip nada. What the hell, Netgear? If you are going to charge the pants off someone for your product then make sure the thing actually does what its supposed to do.

I mean, I may live in South Africa but TP link, ASUS and all the other manufacturers' router/modems work here, what is wrong with yours? Or should I say what is wrong with you?

Hahahaha yeah the Netgear D7800 seems like it would be quite at home in Fawlty Towers.
I am upgrading (I am using the word "upgrading" in the broadest possible terms) from an ASUS DSL N55-U.
I am not a techie so I am not sure what you mean by ADSL configuration parameters, but if you are a bit more specific then i can find out for you.
My ISP is Telkom in South Africa.

Was just wondering, has anyone tried the open source firmware as a possible solution for this issue?

Re: D7800 cant pick up ADSL dsl light stays amber

Parameters is a bit of a broad term hence my request for clarification. I have put the parameters in which i got from Telkom already. I have changed the firmware to every version from .16 to .31 with no luck. Let me just check that i didnt skip .22

Re: D7800 cant pick up ADSL dsl light stays amber

So I changed firmware to .22. Went through the process as given to me by the NETGEAR support assistant yesterday. Checked all my ADSL "parameters" (referred to by my ISP as ADSL "settings") and.......

Nothing

Yes did a factory reset after upgrading to .22
ASUS settings are identical to these and it works perfectly.

That's usually a router thing. There is rarely third party firmware for modem/routers.

Hi. I have had to give it a break for a while to attend to some other matters on the nature reserve. I will take up the fight again once i am home this evening. Or just take the router out for some target practice.

I did download the 299pg manual as well. But thanks anyway. I did buy it locally and would therefore assume that it is approved for use in South Africa.

Let us know when you start working on this and we can all pray that it goes well.

Good luck. I hope you don't need it.

Re: D7800 cant pick up ADSL dsl light stays amber

So what arent you buying. I was sent a replacement unit. Have firmware V1.0.1.31 installed. All the settings are correct from the telkom site (double and triple checked) including the VLANID settings as you stated. And..... nothing. Amber light at the DSL remains.
Interestingly if i change the mode from router and modem to modem only the dsl light changes to white, change it backnto modem and router and it changes back to amber . So no, @Case850 it was not the VLANID or Priority settings that caused the unit not to work it is some other setting which nobody (not even you) has figured out yet.

That _is_ interesting.  If the D7800 is in modem-only mode, does that
move the PPP (PPPoA or PPPoE) authentication to some other device
(like some other router)?  And do you have any special characters in
those PPP credentials?  There have (for years) been known problems with
special characters in PPP credentials on multiple models.  See, for

example:

(I also got a private message from a fellow with a D7000v2 (unknown
firmware version) with a similar problem.)

Re: D7800 cant pick up ADSL dsl light stays amber

Ok so I eventually have life. And all it took was 15min on hold to Telkom in order to get a new password. Now whether there was an issue with the previous password or whether i was inputting it incorrectly, I dont know and I am actually beyond caring. Its doubtful that it was inputted incorrectly seeing as it was working on the other router. It works, that is the main thing. The VLANID thing is incorrect though it works if the "Use VLANID" box is left unticked and the "Prioriy" comfigiration box is left blank.
Thanks to everyone for their help.

I still care.  What was the old password?  (Or, if it's still a
secret for some reason, did it contain any special characters?)

   But not the only thing.

Some would say that "well done" includes "well documented".

The old password had an @ in it. The new one has no special characters.

Thanks for the info.  I wouldn't have expected "@" to cause trouble,
and we're probably past testing, so it may remain a mystery.

On the bright side, it seems that that modem-only-mode test may be a
good way to verify that the problem is in the PPP credentials rather
than the low-level DSL parameters.
