If it is working, leave it alone. Don't mess around until you need to deal with any problems that may arise later.
When I set up my DM200 I just let it do its thing.
I set it up to connect to the internet, reset the R7800 router to get it to forget time it had spent with a different modem, and set that up the R7800 from scratch.
One thing I would do is to ensure that the DM200 has the latest firmware on it before setting everything up.

My guess is that Netgear has worked out how to get these things to play nicely together without too much user intervention.
I didn't start messing around with the DM200 until I needed to add some other stuff to the network.
My comments were based on using a DM200, not just stiuff I saw in manuals. That is why I know that you'll get nowhere if you faff around with 192.168.5.1 in modem-only mode. I had to read the manual to understand how that works.

Firmware versions? LED indicators? What does the DM200 tell you
through its web site ("192.168.5.1")? Any information beyond "no
internet"?
The non-psychics in your audience may know little about how your DSL
service is arranged, or how your DM200 is configured. PPPoA? PPPoE?
Other? If PPPoE, do you need to configure that on the R8000?
Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look
for Documentation. Get the User Manual(s). Read? Look for
"Troubleshoot with the LEDs" and/or "Cannot Access the Internet".

Re: Dm200
Have you started everything in the specified order?
There is support for the DM200, including a manual, somewhere at the end of this link:
>>> DM200 | Product | Support | NETGEAR <<<
The quick start guide lays down the law on that.
To get back into the modem's controls when it is in modem only mode, see the bit in the manual Reenable the Modem’s Routing Features. Without doing that you will get nowhere if you try to access 192.168.5.1.

Do you mean the User Manual? Where it says?:
IMPORTANT:
After you disable the modem's routing features and the modem
functions as a DSL modem only, you can access the modem only
through a fixed IP address, which is 192.168.5.1. Therefore,
make sure that IP address 192.168.5.1 is not assigned to another
device on your network.
And:
> To reenable the modem's routing features:
[...]
4. Launch a web browser and enter http://192.168.5.1 in the
address field of the browser. A login window opens.
[...]
7. From the Device Mode menu, select Router (Modem + Router).
[...]
_That_ "a manual"? Did you actually read any of that "a manual"? Or is
it simply error-filled?

Perhaps you're right, for some values of "nowhere", but my reading of
the User Manual seems to differ from yours.

Where?

Did you try it?

Generally, you can expect fewer problems if you have one router, not
two. (Which is what michaelkenward normally tells everyone, along with
his own nonsensical "reasoning" for it.) That would mean configuring
the DM200 as a modem-only, or the R8000 as a wireless access point. In
this case, the router features of a DM200 are so weak, that I'd keep the
R8000 as a full-function router, and try to configure the DM200 as a
modem-only.
However, if you won't/can't answer the previous questions, then there
may be little anyone can do to help you get to such a configuration.
And cascading two routers is not fatal, only troublesome in some
situations.

You lost me. Are you saying that the manual is wrong, or that you
were wrong? Or that "works" and "will get nowhere" mean the same thing?
