Ethernet cable disconnects internet on Macbook

Have just installed Netgear AC1200 WiFi Modem Router.
We have a PC, a Surface and A Macbook Pro.
Wifi works OK on all of these devices.
Cable connection is fine with the PC but when connected to the Mac in another room (by ethernet to USB adaptor), the internet connection to the Mac becomes disabled after a short while (about 10-20 seconds).
This cable worked fine with our old Belkin modem just hours ago.
Have tried cycling the modem, cycling the Mac, switching off WiFi on the Mac, pressing the WiFi button on the modem.
Is this a switching issue? It seems as soon as the Mac sees the cable it disconnects from the net.
Great to have WiFi working but we bought this new modem to have the option to easily switch off WiFi and just use cable connections when we are in our office.
I am certainly not technically gifted, so hope there is some fairly simple thing to do. Would really appreciate some advice on how to fix this.

Thanks for your help Darren. Problem is now resolved. Was a coincidental fault in one cable link.
