Modem router recommendations

Hi hope you’re all doing well

I need help deciding what to get , got a d7800 about two weeks ago
all was good with the nighthawk up about a week ago when I noticed that although the internet is on and 2.4 has his light on I can’t connect to it until I reboot it. Had some reading over forums and apparently is a common problem with it that was never fixed, have latest updates.

now my question is what router modem can you recommend to get that is stable with ok range for a flat?

I will prefer to have smart connect feature on it so I won’t flaff with 2.4 and 5 and the router to do it automatically because this doesn’t have it

thanks

I wouldn't recommend anything from Netgear, which seems to have lost
interest in DSL.  My D7000[v1] freezes after a month of operation.  The
D7000v2 seems to have more/worse firmware bugs than the D7000[v1].

A DM200 combined with a more serious router might work, but I have no
actual experience with it.  And finding one at a reasonable price might
be difficult.

Re: Modem router recommendations

I’m looking for 2 in 1 kind of thing and yes definitely not netgear

I really don’t know how are they allowed to sell these things with no support or functionality and get away with it is disgusting

I wouldn't. Combined devices lack the features and flexibility of separate kit. And if you change ISP or move house you are stuck with something that is mostly useless.

The challenge is in finding a modem of any brand. The brands seem to be withdrawing from that sector. (I suspect skulduggery on the part of the ISPs.) You don't say where you are, so we can;t tell you which bit of Amazon to look at. (No need to buy from there, but it is as good a catalogue as you'll find, although one router gets billed there as a modem/router, despite several attempts to get Amazon to correct the listing.)

The DrayTek Vigor 130 seems to be a rare router-free listing. But it costs nearly as much as a modem/router.

If you can lay your hands on something like the DM200, that would be a good choice. The prices are getting silly. But you may be able to lay hands on a second hand one. (It is, after all, a pretty basic device with few of the complexities of a router.) I bought a second DM200 from one of those "open box" merchants. In reality it looked new, with all the usual packing and protection. My pair have been pretty well flawless.

Of course, before taking the plunge, it helps to check with your ISP that your hardware choice isn't going to cause hassles. The ISP itself may not want to tell you anything, but a user forum could well reveal some grisly stories of troublesome hardware.

You don't seem to have put much effort onto fixing the D7800 – maybe that is in a different discussion – but if the modem bit maintains its DSL and Internet connections, you could use it as a front end for a grown up router.

The problem there, as I discovered with the D6400, is that when the power goes out, the modem/router can be so slow to reconnect that the router behind it times out before it can connect.

A good reason for having a separate router, although Mesh technology might be better if the flat is big enough to warrant more than one wifi source.
