Nighthawk AC2600 D7800 - No DSL Cable is Plugged into the Router ADSL Port

Hi,

I have just purchased a D7800 Modem Router to replace a D-Link DSL-2750B and i can not get it to set up.

The twisted pair LED will not illuminate and I get the below error during set up

No DSL Cable is Plugged into the Router ADSL Port.

I have literally unplugged the phone line from the D-Link (which has internet connection) and put it in the gray port) on the D7800.

The D7800 is at firmware V1.0.1.56 and my ISP is Internode ADSL.

I do have low speeds here so not sure if that is a factor too.

Any help wpuld be greatly appreciated.

Could be a DOA box, but have you tried a different phone cable and DSL filter?

No light at all on the DSL LED hints at a bad connection.

What about the other LEDs? Power LED OK?

Plugged in before you turn the thing on?

Thanks for the reply.

Tried a different phone socket, phone line and filter.

Powers up, wi-fi works, relevant LEDs light up.  Phone line plugged in before power up.

If this is a standard DSL line, sounds like it is dead on arrival.

Know any neighbours where you could check the thing?

I ended up replacing the unit, still didn’t work.

After a lot of digging around the web found out that newer firmware does not seem to like Australian ADSL. Installed an older version of firmware and has worked flawlessly since.

Pretty disappointed in Netgear support knowledge on this. Guy on phone had no idea on how Australian internet works.

Re: Nighthawk AC2600 D7800 - No DSL Cable is Plugged into the Router ADSL Port

I am using V1.0.1.22

Has done the job nicely but I will not update any firmware until I am on NBN.  Was promised to be April, but Coronavirus might have delayed that I reckon!

Possibly. Without more details it is impossible to tell

Sadly, there can be various things that deliver what look like the same symptoms.

You can test that theory by installing older firmware.

A couple of things try, if you haven't already:

  • reset the D7800 with the existing firmware
  • reset the D7800, install an older firmware, reset it and try again

Is this also on NBN like @Pookie976?

If so, there may be some subtle tweaks that you need to make to the DSL settings.

If it is FTTC, as in fibre to the curb (Oz style) and not fibre to the cabinet (UK style), this is certainly the case with TPG as the Internet service provider.

Unfortunately, TPG seems to have a poor support service that does not realise the need for this and has a hard time communicating with customers.

None of this may apply to the current conversation, but it does show that the circumstances can be important and that there's a lot we don't know about your setup.

@michaelkenward

i have done all the above already, i am FTTC

tried rolling it back to older Firmware versions multiple times, done 2 resets, im with Belong internet ( so telstra) in AUS

the previous modem router that was sent away for RMA, was at highest firmware version. but still after all these issues DSL light never appears to be on , after replacing all cables and checking all connections. just find it weird this only occured 2 weeks ago all of a sudden never had a issue before .

edit: yes it is on NBN just like pookie so i have checked its set to VDSL2

We have NBN now and it is still all good.  Turned off and on again once we updated and all running fine.  Still on the older firmware.

Did you find this?

Search - NETGEAR Communities – D7800 NBN

There are plenty of messages about getting this modem/router to work on NBN. Maybe one covers your circumstances.

Then there is this:

What is an NBN network and is my NETGEAR DSL modem router compatible? | Answer | NETGEAR Support

While Netgear lists all manner of things as being "compatible" with NBN in that article, in reality this often means that the device will work as a router. You have to bypass the modem bit and use something else as a modem.

It is a pity that Netgear does not make that clearer in its advice to NBN users. It might prevent people from wasting money on an incompatible modem router. They would be better off buying a simple router and using whatever modem their ISP provides, or buying one suitable for their Internet service.
