Nighthawk D7800 X4S NBN - FTTP Setup Issues

Hi Guys,

I have been pulling my hair out for 2 days trying to set up a new D7800 that I purchased on the weekend.
My property is luck to have the NBN FTTP, but there is very little info I have found to help with troubleshooting and getting it working.

The issue I am getting is there is no Internet connection through the Nighthawk... All I am getting is a solid Amber LED on the DSL link.

I have gone through the setup wizard numerous times. Tried all the settings in both the quick start and PDF manual with no luck. I checked the ISP settings they recommend for external modems and still no luck. I have even reset the NBN co Modem (power off for 10 then power back on). And checked the WAN settings were set to recieve from the NBN co Modem.

Here is the interesting thing though - I have an older TP-Link Archer VR1600v that is working fine with NBN, so I know my cabling, internet, and NBN Modem are ok. Though it doesn't show a DSL link LED, just an internet LED is illuminated

Any help or assistance would be greatly appreciated. I'm at the end of my rope and considering returning it for another brand.

   Firmware version?

Information is pretty sparse in your problem description, too.

> [...] All I am getting is a solid Amber LED on the DSL link.

As a start, visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model
number, and look for Documentation.  Get the User Manual.  Look for the
LED descriptions and "Troubleshoot".

   On the D7800, there's a single LED for "DSL/Internet", so it's not
clear whether your problem is with the DSL link or the Internet
connection.  In the D7800 management web site, what's in the report from
ADVANCED > ADVANCED Home : Internet Port : Show Statistics?

> Tried all the settings [...]

Not a useful description of anything.

> [...] I checked the ISP settings [...]

The non-psychics in your audience may not know which ISP or what
those "the ISP settings" might be.

> [...] I have even reset the NBN co Modem [...]

What, exactly, is that?  Does it provide a DSL connection, or what?

> [...] And checked the WAN settings were set to recieve from the NBN co
> Modem.

Can't see those "the WAN settings", either.

Try this:

Nighthawk D7800 AC2600 NBN with FTTC - NETGEAR Communities

A forum search will find other NBN D7800 sagas.

Just go for the right product. Don't buy something that isn't designed for your Internet service.

Hi Michael,
I did have a look at the FTTC thread but its different to my connection. FTTC is fibre optic to the curb, then copper to the model which is a DSL type connection.

FTTP is fibre all the way to my house, and then I have a modem that converts the Fibre to an ethernet signal (supplied by the company that manages the fibre infrastructure - NBN co).

I'll keep trying 🙂

Re: Nighthawk D7800 X4S NBN - FTTP Setup Issues

Hi Antinode,

The current firmware of the unit is 1.0.28, i tried updating to the latest version (.54) but there was an error with the file and it reverted to the firmware it shipped with. I cant seem to find any other versions to try.

Regards to more details of my connection, I have a fibre optic cable that connects to a modem supplied by the company that manages the fibre infrastructure (NBN Co). So the set up I am needing for the D7800 is to operate as a Router, not modem/router... this is done in the WAN settings, and was something I double checked as per my post.

The ISP (internet service provider) settings were supplied by iinet, and advised the manual way to connect using a PPOE connection, but it failed to connect (as did the settings suggested in the PDF manual for the D7800, and the setup wizard.)

I will post a copy of the statistics tonight for you. Cheers

   "1.0.1.28"?

> [...] i tried updating to the latest version (.54) [...]

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look
for Downloads.  (For older versions, under Firmware and Software
Downloads, look for "View Previous Versions".)  Find the kit(s).
Download the kit(s) you want.  Read the "Release Notes" file for
instructions.

When I do that for model "D7800", I see "1.0.1.56", and many others
since "1.0.1.28", but nothing like ".54".

> [...] but there was an error with the file [...]

_Which_ "the file"?  _Which_ "an error"?  When you did _what_,
exactly?  (Or do you think that I should I try a Web search for "an
error"?)

> [...] I cant seem to find any other versions to try.

When you looked where?  See above.

> [...] I have a fibre optic cable that connects to a modem [...]

Does your (unspecified) "a modem" have a maker and model number?  Are
there informative LED indicators on it?

> [...] a modem that converts the Fibre to an ethernet signal [...]

   So, Ethernet, not DSL?

> [...] the set up I am needing for the D7800 is to operate as a Router,

   Ok.

   "double checked" against what?

>    Can't see those "the WAN settings", either.

   Still true.

   Any error message(s)?

If you're using PPPoE, and there are certain special characters in
your PPP credentials, then you could be hitting a common Dxxxx firmware
bug.  See, for example:

If you're not using a DSL connection, then that probably matters
little.
