VDSL modem to Modem-Router

I have a pair of D6220's (on latest firmware).
I'm trying to set one up as a modem only device (DSL) so that I can move the other one more to the middle of my house as a modem-router for better Wifi coverage.
I'm not sure why but when I change the modem-router to modem only the internet light goes orange (I've tried disconnecting the session with my ISP).
Is there another step needed?
I've setup an ethernet cable in Port 1 (not WAN) of the modem going to the WAN port of the modem router.
I've also set the modem router setting to WAN ethernet (instead of DSL)
Am I doing anything incorrectly?
Thanks for your help

Why not leave router 1 in router mode and put the 2nd on in access point mode?
You can set them on separate wireless channels to prevent interference and have both doing wifi coverage.

Re: VDSL modem to Modem-Router
Good move.
(which I've been told it won't work by technical support).
I hope that wasn't Netgear support.
The good news is that the D6220 comes with AP mode built in.
You do have to run an Ethernet cable from the router to the AP. I have found that I can use Powerline Ethernet to a the router to AP connection over the domestic mains circuit.
