router behind router

Hi,

I`ve been trying to get this to work for 3 hours but am not sure if this is possible,dgnd3700v2 to connect to dsl connection and behind that i wish to use a wndr3700v4 running wrt to connected to ipvanish.  At one point I managed to be able to see the wrt router connected to the dgnd3700 but couldn`t figure out why it would not connect to ipvanish server.  I reset everything to try again but now i can`t get it to work at all. Is it possible to get this to work and if so can someone give me step by step instructions or a webpage that explains this?

thanks in advance.

Assuming that "wrt" means DD-WRT, then I would not expect to find
many experts on it, nor on the IPVanish VPN, in these Netgear forums.

   I rest my case.

Never having tried any of this stuff, I know nothing, but my quick
Web search found:

      https://support.ipvanish.com/hc/en-us/articles/115002080733

which discusses, among other things, "running a router-behind-router
configuration", which seems to be pretty normal in this context.  (But
what do I know?  On the other hand, I seem to have at least a weak grasp
on how much I don't know about DD-WRT and IPVanish, which may put me
ahead of some.)

That non-description conveys no useful information about what you
did, nor what happened when you did it.  From my very limited reading,
you would seem to need a plan for which router uses which subnet, how
the IPVanish VPN should be configured, and so on.

I suggest starting with a Web search for keywords like, say:
      ipvanish dd-wrt

If you can find someone who actually knows something about this
stuff, then I'd predict that you'll need to provide a better problem
description than "[...] able to see the wrt router connected to the
dgnd3700 but couldn`t figure out why it would not connect to ipvanish
server", or "i can`t get it to work at all".  As usual, showing actual
actions with their actual results (error messages, ...) can be more
helpful than vague descriptions or interpretations.

Re: router behind router

If you want to use the wndr3700v4 after the dgnd3700v2, then you will need to disable the router feature on one of them.

That means disabling the router bit of the dgnd3700v2  and using it as "modem only" with the wndr3700v4  working as the router,  or using the dgnd3700v2 as a modem/router and the wndr3700v4 in "access point" (AP) mode, which will disable its router.

I have no idea about ipvanish, so the choice between these two modes is down to you. The second scenario might be the easiest to set up, but will the ipvanish thing work in AP mode?

Re: router behind router

Hi,

Sorry I should have explained better,I had it working as you described but that does not allow me to use the second router to connect to ipvanish server.  I need the first router to log in to my adsl internet and the second one to log into my ipvanish account.  any ideas?

I described two ways of making it work. Which worked for you?

Modem/router followed by access point?

Modem followed by router?

It sounds like you need to run the first as modem only mode amd the second as a rpouter that can work with ipvanish.

You need to set the first device to work in bridge mode.

It looks like the DGND3700v2 has an option to work in modem mode.

There is a manual for the DGND3700v2 somewhere at the end of this link:

>>>> DGND3700v2 | Product | Support | NETGEAR <<<<

See p 123.

Re: router behind router

I Set the DGND3700 to modem only and used the WNDR3700 as the router, this worked but I could only log in to my isp.  There was no way to connect to the ipvanish server.  I think I need to us both as routers and then allow the WNDR3700 to run the PPPTP connection to the ipvanish server?   My thinking is that the first modem/router should be set to 192.168.0.1 and then the router should be 192.168.0.2 and then allow the second to control DHCP?

Isn't that what modem mode does?

Did you start the new network according to the correct procedure?

Be sure to restart your network in this sequence:

  • Turn off and unplug the modem.
  • Turn off the modem router and computers.
  • Plug in the modem and turn it on. Wait 2 minutes.
  • Turn on the modem router and wait 2 minutes.
  • Turn on the computers.

This is important. Get it wrong and things will not take control in the right sequence.

Could be. The best place to seek help on that might be over where they chat about ipvanish. You may be trying to achieve something with seriously old hardware that just won't work.

By the way, how fast is your Internet connection? You are playing with old and slow hardware here. The top speed of your LAN is 100BASE-Tx. Newer kit does 1000BASE-Tx. At 100BASE-Tx, which dates back more than 20 years, your local network may be slower than your Internet.

If you can bring yourself to spend some money, it might be worth investing in something more modern. A  new router alone won't get you very far if you plug it into a modem that connects at a snail's pace.
