using DGN2200v4 with DM200

I am currently using a DGN2200v4 on a TalkTalk ADSL2 connection. We are about to change to Plusnet FTTC with a VDSL connection. The DGN2200v4 is not compatible with VDSL but I want to continue using it because it has a lot of features not present on the supplied Plusnet router and it has settings like portforwarding and address reservations which I would prefer not to have to redo. I am therefore planning to use a DM200 as the modem with the DGN2200v4 as the router. I have a few questions: 1. On the DM200 do I untick "use router as DHCP server" in the LAN settings on the assumption all DHCP will be handled by the DGN2200v4? 2. On the DGN2200v4 do I select AP mode in the Wireless AP screen? If so do I then choose or "Get an IP address dynamically from the other router" or . "Fixed IP address (not recommended)". If I have disabled the DHCP server on the DM200 then I assume the first option won't work? If I select fixed IP address then what settings do I use for:IP Address, Gateway address, and the 2 DNS addresses? The router is currently 192.168.1.1. Can I choose that as the router IP address in AP mode? Thanks.

I've never touched a DM200, so I know nothing, but I'd say that what
you want is: ADVANCED > Advanced Setup > Device Mode : Modem (Modem
only).  Disabling this or that router feature (DHCP server, ...) won't
do the whole job.

In AP mode, all those "settings like portforwarding and address
reservations" will be ignored.  What you (seem to) want is to disable
the router functions in the DM200, not those in the DGN2200v4 .

If you haven't already, then visit http://www.netgear.com/support ,
put in your model number, and look for Documentation.  Get the User
Manual.  Look for "Disable the Modem's Routing Features and Use the
Modem as a DSL Modem Only".

Re: using DGN2200v4 with DM200

Understood about the DM200 settings. Thanks. It seems I then only need to connect the DM200 modem to port 4 of the DGN2200 and it automatically uses that, instead of its own ADSL modem, as the internet connection without me changing anything. I wasn't expecting it to be so easy!

Glad to hear that you got it working.  (What could go wrong?)

The automatic decision on DSL v. Port-4-WAN should work, but there's
also a manual method: ADVANCED > Setup > WAN Setup.

Re: using DGN2200v4 with DM200

Even if you can get the DGN2200v4 to work with a new modem, have you investigated the "bang for the buck" options for a new VDSL modem router?

If it is just the modem you need, does TalkTalk supply one? Its website promises a "free" modem router.

If so, why not start out with whatever it dumps on you? You could save yourself the cost of the DM200, or use TalkTalk's modem with a new router.

I say this not knowing what TalkTalk provides as hardware. TalkTalk is a hopeless Internet service provider – it was a great release when I moved to BT, which is saying something –  but it may buy in modems from a reasonable source.

Looking at the specifications of the DGN2200v4, the LAN speeds is just 100BASE-Tx. This is slower than most  PCs these days. If you have fast broadband, ~70Mbps, it is even approaching the speed limits there.

I can't even see any reference to 5GHz wifi,  which is the standard used by most modern tablets and mobile phones.

Remember, deals time in the shops. Might be some bargains out there.

Re: using DGN2200v4 with DM200

I didn't say that it was working! I just now know what settings should work. The router is at my sailing club and I haven't ben there to try it out yet. Some people report problems using the DM 200 in modem only mode so maybe ther are problems ahead. What happens if I leave the DM200 in modem+router mode - will that cause problems?

Incidently when you set the DN200 to modem only all the WAN settings are greyed out. I would expect the LAN settings to be greyed out but why can't you change the modem settings when in modem only mode. Weird. Seems you have to get the modem working with the ADSL/VDSL connection in modem/router mode then switch to modem only.

Did anyone suggest that it was?

You will then have two devices trying to act as the router on the network.

Look into using the DGN2200v4 as an access point.

It can.  Cascading routers can cause problems ("double NAT") for
incoming connections (to servers).  If all you have are outgoing
connections (from clients), then you may not care.

A true (modem-only) modem is always outside the LAN, which makes it
hard to use a web-browser interface to manage it from inside the LAN.
In a modem+router combination device, the router part is on the LAN,
which makes it easy to use a web-browser interface to manage (all parts
of) the combination device.  As the manual says (but doesn't really
explain), in modem-only mode, the management web site uses a fixed,
off-LAN IP address:

      http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/DM200/DM200_UM_EN.pdf

      IMPORTANT:
After you disable the modem's routing features and the modem
functions as a DSL modem only, you can access the modem only
through a fixed IP address, which is 192.168.5.1. Therefore,
make sure that IP address 192.168.5.1 is not assigned to another
        device on your network.

In the old days, a true modem might have had a serial port
(completely unrelated to the LAN) which could be used to manage the
device.  These days, trying to support such a scheme would be very
difficult (lack of serial ports on modern computers, user acceptance of
command-line interfaces, ...).

> Look into using the DGN2200v4 as an access point.

"Wireless AP" in the User Manual.  You get to decide if one router or
the other has/lacks any particular feature of interest.

Re: using DGN2200v4 with DM200

Antinode - It did occur to me that there might be a problem comunicating over a web interface in modem only mode but the web interface does actually still work (for some things) in modem only mode. Given that you can communicate with the DM200 in that mode I can't quite understand why you can't control the modem ADSL/VDSL settings. Alway difficult to reverse engineer these things. At least there is work round.
