Changing 802.11x from automatic to only b/g for Fitbit Aria connect

Hello,

I'm trying to connect to my fitbit aria via my DGND3700. Fitbit technical support have told me that the Aria does not support the n format for wifi.

After going through the user manual (http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/DGND3700/DGND3700_UM_11May11.pdf) under the advanced settings and checking through the router webpage, I cannot find a setting to change the connectivity specification from n type or automatic to b/g.

If this cannot be done is there an alternative?

I look forward to someone's help in the matter. I will RTFM in the mean time.

Kind regards,

Doom

Re: Changing 802.11x from automatic to only b/g for Fitbit Aria connect

This, from page 44 of the manual, is probably your best hope; “Mode Up to 145 Mbps is the default and allows 802.11n and 802.11g wireless devices to join the network. g & b supports up to 54 Mbps. Up to 65 Mbps supports up to 65 Mbps.” If that does not cause the router to drop any ‘N’ related data from its transmitted frames then I don’t think there’s much else you can do in the router settings. In that case I would suggest buying a cheap B/G access point (or router to configure as an Access Point), but make sure its encryption capability is up to date i.e. it is WPA2 AES capable.

Thanks Babylon5
I will test this over the weekend when I return from travels shortly. In the mean time I will source a cheap router in case option 1 fails.

Cheers,

Re: Changing 802.11x from automatic to only b/g for Fitbit Aria connect

Hi Andy,

So I finally managed to test your ideas.

1. I adjusted the settings in the mode to change the speed. I also set the channel to 1 instead of auto as per fitbits tech support request. This did not work

2. I setup another router - HG532d_300Mbps_Wireless_ADSL2 (you can search for user manual online if need be). I set it for b/g and adjusted channel. Again the Aria failed to connect using both a windows launched executable and online mode

3. I then setup a wireless repeater function, making the netgear the master base station MAC and the Huawei as a slave to send all traffic to netgear router. I believe I set the Huawei correctly using both user manuals. I made the Huawei with only b/g and channel one, keeping the same SSID, P/W etc. Again the Aria failed to connect.
I did notice some things that may have meant I did not set it up correctly.
3.1 2 SSIDs would appear even though they are the same name.
3.2 The netgear router would not let me create the WPA2psk-AES security key - this had to be removed in order to allow wireless repeating for a multi-point setup.
3.3 I was able to setup WEP - WPA2psk-AES in the Huawei router.

In the multi-point setup is there a way to ensure the Fitbit Aria will default to connecting to the Huawei router instead of the netgear. I assume this requires more setting adjustment. This may be beyond your scope of help though as you do not specialise in Huawei - I will consult them in the matter.

Thanks for your solutions though Andy.

Re: Changing 802.11x from automatic to only b/g for Fitbit Aria connect

I believe that Netgear routers that support repeating will do so using WDS/WEP which Netgear are phasing out, it is being removed from several routers by firmware update, and newer routers don’t support it at all. It would seem that your ‘3700 still has that capability, and in that case your only encryption option is WEP. One of the other problems with WDS repeating is that there were often problems with interoperability between devices from different manufacturers.

So, what I am basically saying is that you may be out of luck in trying to connect to the ‘3700 in the way you want.
