Configuring D7000 with access point

Hi - I am new to the community and hoping someone might be able to help me with the setup of an access point to work with my D7000 router.

My current setup is an ADSL line coming into my D7000 router with 3x TVs connected via CAT6 directly to the router. This works fine and whilst connected to the router i can access the internet and cast via AirPlay2 to all of the TVs.

Unfortunately my D7000 range does not cover my whole flat so I hace a TP link router that I have connected via CAT6 as an access point. I currently have had to put this on a different SSID because I found that smart devices were unavailable on apps depending which router they connnected to. Even with the same SSID on the access point I cannot cast via AirPlay2 to the TV if the iPad/iPhone is connected to the TP Link access point.

I would be forever greatful is someone could help me with how to configure the access point so that it can exist on the same SSID whilst keeping all devices discoverable eg a TV connected via CAT6to the D7000 with an iPad connected to the TP Link access point and being able to cast from the iPad to the TV using AirPlay.

Thanks in advance if anyone can help

Re: Configuring D7000 with access point

The only thing I'd do on the D7000 is assign the TP link router a reserved IP. I'm guessing you would be using either ethernet or powerline to connect a ethernet port on the D7000 to the WAN port on the TP link. The TP link should have an AP setting that you'd then set which should also want you to set the gateway address which would be the D7000, probably 192.168.0.1, can't remember if the other thing is subnet mask or DNS. Subnet mask would be 255.255.255.0 and DNS would be 192.168.0.1.

A Netgear forum might not be the best place to find/get information
about some (unspecified) "a TP link router" which is configured as a
wireless access point (somehow).

I know approximately nothing about AirPlay, but if it involves
broadcast messages, then getting them through a WAP might need some
consideration on the part of the people who designed the WAP.

Re: Configuring D7000 with access point

Hi - thanks for the reply. I am keen to know what settings to apply to my D7000 router so that the access point I have linked to it allows deveices to be discovered across both the access point wireless network and the D7000 wireless network. I specifically need to fix this because we want to be able to use AirPlay but the same issue applies to any smart device that needs to access the our smartthings or philips hue bridge attached to my D7000.

Having researched on the forum I beleive I need to use fixed IPs for both routers and configure the subnet mask - if that sounds about right and someone could help me with what settings to apply that would be a huge help.

Re: Configuring D7000 with access point

I was inclined to say that "you can't get both to work and leave each as the same SSID" but then I did some surfing and it seemed it might be possible, but honestly I don't think you are going to get your answers here, from what I have observed about the level of tech expertise (no offense to anyone) on this site.

I doubt that you need to set anything special on the D7000 (router).
I'd expect any problem to lie with your (still unspecified) "a TP link
router" which is configured as a wireless access point (somehow).

If the problem is with getting broadcast messages through the WAP,
then other devices may not be affected.

   Thanks for the helpful links.

What led you to that conclusion?  First, a router has multiple IP
addresses.  The D7000 LAN IP address is normally "192.168.0.1", and it
won't spontaneously wander.  I still know nothing about your WAP, but,
if it's using DHCP to get its address, then you could reserve an address
for it on the (DHCP server on the) D7000.  I don't see how that would
help anything.

Getting some actual information might be wiser.

A WAP is all-LAN.  Why would a WAP have any interest in a gateway or
a DNS server?

You almost certainly won't if all you can say about your second gizmo
is, "a TP link router that I have connected via CAT6 as an access
point."

@w3wilkes answer resolved the issue - thanks to all for the response (even the passive aggresive ones)
