D2200D and OPENDNS

Folks,

I have a D2200D dsl router from our provider Frontier and I'm trying to set up OPENDNS.  I can't seem to edit the DNS setting to eliminate their main DNS server address It's set to 192.168.254.254.  I have been in contact with Frontier; their tech support doesn't seem to really understand their product.  I was talking with their specialists and they had no idea a service like OpenDNS existed and did not have any idea of the admin screens in the router itself.  Moved on to OpenDNS who has been great to work with, but now am at the point where they're asking me to contact Netgear for assistance with Netgear's router.  I've attached the two main screens I've been working with, but no luck making a change to point to the actual DNS server I'd like to point to. Any ideas?

Re: D2200D and OPENDNS

The D2200D is a "Gateway", a modem/router, rather than a simple router. As it comes from your ISP, there is a good chance that it is tailored to its specifications and that some things are beyond your control.

Sadly, because it is not a Netgear consumer product, with no retail version, there is no manual to consult. They probably don't support it either. That is down to the ISP.

192.168.254.254 is the "gateway" local IP address of your D2200D.

The DNS will be something else out on the Internet. Most Netgear routers have an option to pick a DNS server by address or to "Get Automatically from ISP".

It may be that the ISP has its own DNS and you have to go through that. Hence that option is missing.

If possible, ands you can find something compatible, you might be able to replace the ISP's modem/router with one of your own. Then you can control your own destiny.

Thank you for the response.  This is as I suspected.
