D6200 Custom LAN IP

Hi All,

I am having issues with my old D6200 (FW ver; V1.1.00.30_1.00.30). I am trying to assign a different LAN IP (10.1.1.125). I am configuring the D6200 as a sort of AP.

I keep getting an error of "Invalid IP Address. Please enter it again". I can avoid this error message if I change the DHCP range from .2 to .120 however this then leaves the D6200 unable to connect to the internet.

I currently have my root router (MediaAccess TG789vac v2) assigning the 10.1.1.125 IP address to the D6200's MAC address, which seems to work fine. The issue is that I cannot login to the D6200 with the 10.1.1.125 IP address, it has be logged in via 192.168.0.1

I know it's not a big issue, however it is the only router (of 5 setup in this way) that I am having this issue with, all other 4 are different brands.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Alexx

That could be.  It certainly wouldn't make much sense to have the
router's LAN IP address in its DHCP server's pool.  Perhaps that's why
typical router default addresses are ".1" or ".254", to allow a large,
contiguous DHCP pool.

> Another thing to note is that 10.1.1.255 was also not accepted.

   Also not a surprise.  ".255" (in a "255.255.255.0" subnet) is a
broadcast address, not for normal use.

I'm still trying to figure out why, if you're "configuring the D6200
as a sort of AP", you still want its DHCP server to operate.

For now, I have accepted that the 10.1.1.1 address works on the D6200 and set my root router as 10.1.1.254

So far this has been working for me for 12+ hours now; so I may just leave it as that for now.

I appreciate your paitence and assistance throughout this ordeal though.

Ok.  What are you doing with its WAN/Internet interface?

The router won't allow the WAN and LAN interfaces to be on the same
subnet.

You should be able to do that, but the D6200 User Manual doesn't show
a one-step option for wireless access point configuration, so you'd need
to do it the hard way.  (See below.)  Also, a WAP is all-LAN, so without
that one-step mode option you can't use the D6200 WAN/Internet
interface.  (On models with a one-step WAP-mode option, the WAN/Internet
port is reconfigured as essentially another LAN port, so it can be used
in WAP mode.)

_Which_ "the D6200's MAC address"?  Each interface has its own MAC
address, and, if you're trying to use the D6200 as a WAP, then you can't
use its WAN/Internet interface.  If you've configured the D6200
WAN/Internet interface with a static IP address, then you'd need to
undo that (or redo it with some different-subnet address), so that it
won't stop you from configuring the LAN interface to an address on the
desired subnet.  A settings reset on the D6200 might be a good thing at
this point.

You should be able to reserve an address on the (DHCP server on the)
main router for the D6200 _LAN_ interface, and connect a D6200 _LAN_
port to a LAN port on the main router.

For a step-by-step on how to configure a router which lacks that
one-step WAP-mode option, see:

For a step-by-step on how to configure a router which lacks that
one-step WAP-mode option, see:

      https://community.netgear.com/t5/x/x/m-p/1463500

That's written for a C6300, but the steps are about the same for any
other router (any make/model) which lacks a one-step WAP option,
including a D6200.  (Except that the C6300 has no exposed WAN Ethernet
port, so there's nothing there to ignore explicitly.  The D6200 has a
WAN Ethernet port, so you need to be more careful not to use it.)

I have followed your guide for the C6300 which renders my D6200 useless after step 1.  I change the LAN address to 10.1.1.125 and (root router is 10.1.1.1) reboot, then I cannot log back in at all. I only receive a 169.254 address while connected to the D6200, either via LAN or wireless.

Why is this not a simple setup for Netgear, yet my much older D-Link modem/router worked without fail...

That procedure assumes a normal router configuration to start from.
If you've disabled the DHCP server in the D6200, then that could
explain why:

> [...] I only receive a 169.254 address while connected to the D6200,

"can't" is not a useful useful problem description.  It does not say
what you did.  It does not say what happened when you did it.  As usual,
showing actual actions with their actual results (error messages, LED
indicators, ...) can be more helpful than vague descriptions or
interpretations.

You might need to restart the computer after you change thr router's
LAN IP address.

If the D6200 settings have been reset, then I'd expect that procedure
to work.

The D6200 was factory reset prior to following your provided procedure.

The LAN IP was changed to 10.1.1.125 as soon as the GUI was accessible. Only the PC accessing the modem was connected to LAN4 no other cables connected into WAN, LAN or DSL ports. As I click apply to change the LAN IP, I instantly get the same error of invalid IP address. I only disabled the DHCP server because I received this error and noted that was step 2 of your listed procedure. This promoted the router to reboot. On reboot of the router I get the 169.254 address, even after power down of both router and PC, as well as disconnect from ethernet to WiFi and back. The only way I have then been able to access the GUI again, is to yet again factory reset the modem.

I have never had this issue with Netgear products before, however am now likely to look at another brand for my future customers.

   Where "modem" means "D6200 modem+router"?

If the D6200 is connected to only the PC, then I don't understand
why that happens.  Where, exactly, are you specifying this "the LAN IP"?

You lost me.  Disabling the DHCP server was in step 4.  If you do it
before that, then you won't have an accessible DHCP server, leading to a
self-assigned ("169.254.x.y") address on the PC.

Getting a device whose documentation explains how to configure it as
a WAP might be more helpful than avoiding any particular device brand.
(Or, perhaps, following third-party instructions more carefully.)

Yes, modem = D6200 modem + Router

Yes, that is where I am attempting to set the LAN IP, however the error is persistent. As stated, the only way the D6200 router will allow me to set the specified IP Address in  "ADVANCED > Setup > LAN Setup" is if I dsiable the DHCP server. This then causes the D6200 to reboot. I am unable to set the desired IP in "ADVANCED > Setup > LAN Setup" without disabling the DHCP server. I did confuse your steps, my apologies. Regarless, step 2 of your procedure does not work on this factory restored D6200, or with a reflash of current firmware.

Maybe it is likely that this is either a faulty product, or possible lapse in functionality of the D6200, as the D6300 and D6400's I have previously used are flawless.

If that's true, then you seem to have found Netgear firmware with
unusually low quality.  (Which is saying something.)  If you have some
time to kill, then you might try loading one or more different/older
versions to see if it ever worked properly/better.

I have since been back to this customer and replaced the D6200 with a TP-Link Archer D9 (setup within 3 minutes).

I am now going through and flashing each firmware for the D6200; starting from initial relase to most current. Once the firmware has been flashed; I erase all settings (ADVANCED > Administration > Backup Settings > Erase) to factory default; to ensure no settings would be interfering with the setup process.

I am using a localised PC, connected via ethernet cable directly to the D6200 LAN Port 1

So far;

- 1.00.07; failed to accept custom LAN IP as per Step 2 >> Can I use a C6300 cable modem without cable internet? (Pop up of Invalid IP Address. Please enter it again)

- 1.00.09; failed to accept custom LAN IP as well

I will keep going through the firmware releases; however I am under the impression it is a fault with the D6200 model

I have tried something slightly different on firmware ver 1.00.17

I have been trying to set my LAN IP as 10.1.1.175 (which again was unaccepted on this version), however setting the LAN IP as 10.1.1.1 was accepted and worked.

This is good news and all; however is means I would have to change the root router's LAN IP as well now.

I will flash the newest firmware (1.00.32) and try the same addresses; hopefully 10.1.1.175 will work for me; if not I will look at 10.1.1.1 and changing my root routers IP Address and test further.

The only reason I can see x.x.x.1 working and x.x.x.175 not is due to the DHCP server ranging from x.x.x.2 to x.x.x.254

Another thing to note is that 10.1.1.255 was also not accepted.

That could be.  It certainly wouldn't make much sense to have the
router's LAN IP address in its DHCP server's pool.  Perhaps that's why
typical router default addresses are ".1" or ".254", to allow a large,

   Also not a surprise.  ".255" (in a "255.255.255.0" subnet) is a
broadcast address, not for normal use.

I'm still trying to figure out why, if you're "configuring the D6200
as a sort of AP", you still want its DHCP server to operate.
