I've just bought a new modem router but I can't seem to get it connected to the internet.

Imagine that you knew something, and you read that problem
(non-)description.  What could you do with it?

"I can't seem to get my car to work.  What should I do?"

These forums attract lame problem descriptions, but this one is close
to the bottom, just slightly above the ones which don't include a model
number.

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look
for Documentation.  Get the User Manual (at least).  Read.  Look for the

LED descriptions and "Troubleshoot".

"can't" is not a useful problem description.  It does not say what
you did.  It does not say what happened when you did it.  As usual,
showing actual actions (commands) with their actual results (error
messages, LED indicators, ...) can be more helpful than vague
descriptions or interpretations.

Connected to what?  Who/what is your ISP?  Is this a new
installation, or a replacement for some other gizmo?  _ANY_ information
at all might be more helpful than none.

Re: D6220

I replaced one for tpg but I can't get it to connect. It went into the genie thing to install and asked password and username so I put them in but couldn't connect.

What's tpg?

Which genie was this? Netgear makes life hard for us by having more genies than Aladdin.

What sort of Internet? (I assume DSL.) Which Internet service provider (ISP)?

If you visit the support pages:

Support | NETGEAR

you can feed in your model number and find the documentation for your hardware.

Look for the quick start guide. Let us know what you are doing and where it goes wrong.

What is asking for the password and username?

If it is the internet service, then you'll have to get that from your ISP.

Re: D6220

TPG is the internet provider. So when I put in the wifi details in wifi it then pops up with the install part where I put in admin for username and password for password like it tells me too but doesn't connect. In the manual it says look up support if it doesn't connect 😩 If the internet provider says get one that's vdsl ready does it matter it's vdsl 2? Yes it's dsl.

Wifi details are not the same as those for router management.

Here's just three of the things you may need to fill in:

  • username and password to connect your wifi client to the modem/router (default settings are on the router)
  • username and password for the browser graphical user interface that lets you control the modem.router (default settings are on the router)
  • username and password for your Internet account (ask your ISP)

One thought, as this is an old D6220 it might help to do a "factory reset" and then set it up from scratch. In this way, the setup wizard may kick in and skip over some of those prompts.
