D700 Offline firmware update?

Hi. Can anyone please tell me how to update my DSL modem's firmware offline? I'm having trouble connecting to Frontier and thought an update would help. Thanks!

Re: D700 Offline firmware update?

There's multiple version so make sure you have the correct firmware.

here's your support page. it has manual, firmware, and installation guides.

https://www.netgear.com/support/product/D7000.aspx

The release notes tell you how to update the firmware. Make sure you do it over a hardwired connection and perform a factory reset after updating the firmware for best results. Let us know if this doesn't help and we can look at helping troubleshooting the dsl connection

Re: D7000 Offline firmware update?

Um, no. None of that is true.

Can anyone else tell me how to update a D7000 OFFLINE modem to the latest firmware? I have the latest correct firmware here, there's just no way to do it without the modem being connected to the internet. None that I can find. I have tried. The update software keeps looping back to looking online and won't let me update from here. All I see is a white page with looking for http://www.routerlogin.net on it that never changes. No way to change anything. No instructions on how to do an offline update. I have reset the modem with the button on the back.

Help please.

   You may be mistaken.

Again?  First, it would be comforting if you confirmed that you have
a D7000[v1], and not a D7000v2, and which firmware image file is your
"the latest correct firmware".  What is the current firmware version?

> [...] there's just no way to do it without the modem being connected
> to the internet. [...]

What led you to this (over-broad and erroneous) conclusion?

> [...] None that I can find. [...]

   _That_ might be true.

> [...] The update software keeps looping back to looking online and
> won't let me update from here. [...]

Which "The update software"?  A more useful problem report might
help.  What, exactly, are you doing?  What, exactly, happens when you do
it?  What do the LED indicators on the D7000[vX] indicate?

> [...] All I see is [...]

When you do what, exactly?  Are you using some particular URL in some
web browser or other, running on some type of computer or other, with
some kind of connection to your D7000 (v1 or v2)?  Normally:

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look
for Downloads.  (For older versions, under Firmware and Software
Downloads, look for "View Previous Versions".)  Find the kit(s).
Download the kit(s) you want.  Read the "Release Notes" file for
instructions.

Once you have the appropriate firmware image file on your computer,
there is no need for an Internet connection to do the actual update.  If
you believe that an Internet connection is required, then you're wrong,
and you're misinterpreting what you see.  Among other things, this means
that you should rely less on your interpretations of what's happening,
and put more effort into providing an accurate, complete, precise
description of what you're doing, and what happens when you do it.

Antinode, Do not speak to me again. Stay out of this thread.

Anyone else have any luck with this problem?

Who made you king of the world?

Perhaps no one else has "this problem",  Or, at least, no one else
has described it this poorly in these forums.

I've updated the firmware on my D7000[v1] units (two) at least eight
times, with no particular difficulty, without needing an Internet
connection to do it, simply by following the instructions provided.  If
you're having more trouble, then you might get more and better help by
providing more and better information, rather than by dismissing
everyone who asks for some.

But I can take a hint.  You have my best wishes in your attempts to
gain wisdom without answering any questions.

This walks you through manually updating. you don't need to be online to do so. I've done it numerous times off line

Believe me @plemans knows what they are doing.

If http://www.routerlogin.net does not work, then this might help:

If you cannot login to your router | Answer | NETGEAR Support

This comment is slightly worrying.

From what I can see all of that is true.

If it does not work for you, then you will have to explain what is happening at your end in more detail.

Re: D7000 Offline firmware update?

Tried all your suggestions. This DSL Modem (D7000/AC1900) refuses to connect more than just providing its model name via wifi. No exchange via Ethernet beyond the simple connected signal. Not even it's name. My guess is the previous owner screwed up a firmware update and that's all she wrote. I thought I could get around that. Most routers in the old days had some sort of failsafe feature in such cases. Either this model never had that feature or its firmware is so badly corrupted it no longer works. Either way this modem is toast and going into the junk box. My opinion of Netgear products is low and going down. Thank you for your suggestions in your last post.

Re: D7000 Offline firmware update?

You can always try a tftp procedure to cover all your bases.

Re: D7000 Offline firmware update?

Did your reset routine include the more severe "recovery reset"?

  • Press reset for 30 seconds
  • Keep pressing reset while removing power
  • Keep pressing reset for another 30 seconds while apply power

This is one trick that Netgear uses when it gets beta testers to do cruel things to routers. It can get you back to a position where the standard update process works.

I would be very surprised if someone had tried to put alternative firmware on a D7000. The people who knit that stuff rarely, if ever, try working on modem/routers. They reserve their attention to routers.

If there is third party firmware, then the author's site is the best place to seek recovery strategies. But first you have to know what the firmware is.
