D7000 Not responding/Freezing

Hi all,

Writing this post in frustration and anger! I have a D7000 V1 and it has been constantly dropping off and freezing. It will not connect to the Vodafone VDSL service and out of just trying to get a better wifi signal in my black hole of a house I've put the router into AP mode. Even then it's not responding.I rang netgear today and they told me as it was over the 90 day period I would have to pay for support (what good is a 1 year warranty!!!) but I know the router is faulty as it was previously working.

I have tried the following

  • Updated to the latest firmware V1.0.1.64_1.0.1
  • Factory reset unknown amount of times
  • Tried the 30/30/30 factory reset
  • In AP mode

I don't know what to do next as netgear support say the lights are on which means it must be working fine.

Thanks in advance

"freezing" is not a very detailed description of what the router
does.  LED indicators?  Web interface?  What are the actual symptoms
which you observe?  Your analysis/interpretation of the actual symptoms
is much less interesting.

Why?  That makes sense only if you have another router.  Do you?

When you do _what_?  If you put a D7000 into AP mode, then it won't
have its usual LAN IP address, so you'd need to do something unusual to
talk to its management web site.

   Which "the lights are on"?

Re: D7000 Not responding/Freezing

What I mean by freezing is the interface does not respond I cannot ping the device anymore. The lights that are on stay on. For example I had an Ethernet cable plugged into port one and once the symptoms started I removed it but port one remains lit.

I put the router into AP mode and used the existing ISP router (as I only purchased the router originally for increased WiFi performance) both with DHCP and a manual IP to see whether it was the dsl connection causing the issue but again the unit locks up/stops responding no ping, no access to web interface.

I will attach a picture shortly

That qualifies as frozen in my book.  If the router is that
disconnected from reality, then it's clearly defective.  Whether the
cause is bad hardware or bad firmware is tough to say.  You could try
loading some random old version to see if that has any effect.  If
you're using exotic/unreliable features (ReadySHARE, ...), then you
could try disabling them.  Assuming that none of that helps, then I'd
ask Netgear to replace the thing.

Re: D7000 Not responding/Freezing

FYI my D7000v1 did also have the most bizarre freezeups which included LEDs indicating incorrectly. Over the course of trying to get the thing to work for more than a day at a time I did two things: 1. I downgraded the firmware to .60, and 2. I turned OFF the Beamforming feature.

Yes, #2 seems an odd thing but my router has now worked for MONTHS where initially I could not get it to run for more than a day or two without the hard lockups (which required a Power OFF and back ON again). YMMV

Re: D7000 Not responding/Freezing

I asked netgear to replace it but they did not. They said it was a configuration issue? 17 years working in IT support tells me otherwise.

Re: D7000 Not responding/Freezing

Asked for an RMA and took me 25 minutes to get a reply back saying that I live Australia! I live in the UK and item was purchased from the UK. They can't send me an RMA either yet because their system is broken but I just need to send it to an address. That sounds legitimate without an RMA! The customer service is appalling they person couldn’t understand what I was saying or listen to what I was saying.

Probably the last time I purchase a Netgear Product
