I am reading mixed reports port 80 is reserved for the admin GUI and therefore cannot be used in port forwarding.
*my tests show this holds true, using Ethernet for WAN (not DSL modem)
Can this please be confirmed?
I can’t see anywhere to change the admin GUI port so where is the best place to make a feature request?
I find it utterly ridiculous on a router of this calibre.

I have just switched back to another known working router and it too is now not working.
Therfore I have concluded my ISP must have made a recent change in teh last 48hrs and is now blocking port 80
I will mark this post as accepted solution if it allows.

With my weak psychic powers, I have no idea what you might be
reading.

I also have no idea what your "my tests" might have been, or what the
actual results were. As usual, showing actual actions with their actual
results (error messages, LED indicators, ...) can be more helpful than
vague descriptions or interpretations. An accurate, detailed
description of what you did, and what happened when you did it, would be
much more helpful than what you think it all means.

Around here (D7000v1, V1.0.1.64_1.0.1), I do use the DSL modem, but I
would not expect that to matter, and I definitely have no such problem
(and haven't had with any version since V1.0.1.48_1.0.1).

Re: D7000 Port 80 admin gui reserved
Hi antinode,
Thanks you for your reply. I concede I was in a rush and frustrated when I posted and didn’t include enough information, my apologies.
As per the model listed o eth post I have a V1 and its running Firmware Version V1.0.1.64_1.0.1
To keep things simple for troubleshooting I’m using a small utility to listen on TCP ports 80, 443, 8004
https://www.allscoop.com/tcp-listen.php
My internal subnet is 192.168.140.0/24
My test host in a windows box with a single NIC
I can telnet from the test host to itself 127.0.0.1 on all 3 ports and see the connection establish
I can telnet from another LAN machine to the test host 192.168.140.2 on all 3 ports and see the connection establish
From 2 different multiple external locations I can only telnet on ports 443 and 8004 and see the connection establish but not to port 80
My port forward settings on my router are shown below, as you can see the rules are consistent with one and other.
*Using another router in this place connected to the same cable modem (bridged) allows for NAT on port 80 so its not an ISP restriction.
Here is one example of a post
“DarrenM NETGEAR Moderator NETGEAR Moderator”
“port 80 is reserved on the router and can not be forward”
It may make sense port 80 cannot be forwarded from the public WAN interface while its used for the Admin GUI but if thisis the case you should be able to set the admin GUI to use another report eg 8080
Port Forwarding | |
Port Triggering |
# | Service Name | Service Type | External Starting Port | Internal Starting Port | Server IP Address
1 | HTTP | TCP | 80-80 | 80-80 | 192.168.140.2
2 | HTTPS | TCP | 443-443 | 443-443 | 192.168.140.2
3 | random8004 | TCP | 8004-8004 | 8004-8004 | 192.168.140.2 |

Re: D7000 Port 80 admin gui reserved
Extra note
I’ve just discovered and now I suspect it has something to do with that either the admin GUI or the READYshare.
Under basic settings > Readyshare > USB Storage > USB Storage (Basic Settings) is set to "basic" (no option to disable)
Under advanced settings > USB Storage >Readyshare > I have ALL unchecked
Yet I can still browse to http://readyshare.routerlogin.net/shares internally
Also Under advanced settings > Advanced Setup > USB Settings > I have set
Enable any USB Device connected to the USB port as "NO" (in attempt to completely stop readyshare unsuccessfully)
*R7000 but same issues

Re: D7000 Port 80 admin gui reserved
Even with HTTP disabled in readyshare it still hosts a page/service on port 80 internal
Albeit with "503 The Share is not available" html page
Darren again in another thread

This is part of where my "ridiculous" comes from 😞
*I should also point out I have UPNP disbaled (I rebooted after to ensure all changed were effective)

Re: D7000 Port 80 admin gui reserved
Apolgies for the numerous posts. Im just adding all my troubleshooting in case its usefully to someone else in future.
Interestingly I also get he same behavor with the test host IP set as "Default DMZ Server" (no port forward rules in place)

You seem to have skipped an intermediate test: Telnet to the WAN
address of the router from within the LAN.
> [...] Therfore I have concluded my ISP must have made a recent change

Possible. If you can reach the desired server from the LAN at the
router WAN address, but not through your ISP to the same address, then
that would seem to point to the ISP as the culprit.
Clearly, you can't have both port forwarding to your server, and the
router itself, using the same external port. I do very little with
ReadySHARE, so I know nothing, but it's interesting that it has a fixed
port (80) for HTTP, but lets you choose the port for HTTPS. Not what
I'd call ideal design.
