D7000 as a router for cable not dsl
Is there anyway I can configure this to run and work as a router for my cable network?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look
for Documentation. Get the User Manual. Read. Look for "Set Up the
Modem Router for Cable or Fiber Service". (Tricky, right?)

So, you have a D7000v2, not a D7000[v1]. Sadly, the D7000v2 User
Manual is lousy with errors, especially in parts relevant to this, so
you may need to do some reasoning as well as reading. The D7000[v1]
User Manual might be helpful, too. (The D7000[v1] actually does
have the "red Internet port" mentioned in the D7000v2 User Manual, for
example.)

A quick glance at the product label should resolve any uncertainty.
("D7000" = D7000v1.)

It's far from impossible, unless you get hung up trying to find that
"red Internet port".

Re: D7000 as a router for cable not dsl
See the section in the manual Set Up the Modem Router for Cable or Fiber Service.
As you said, Port 4 on the back of the D7000v2 is labelled Ethernet WAN. Connect that to the cable modem.
Be careful to do things in the order specified. It is important.
Also check that the existing modem is not also a router. (If it has its own array of LAN ports that is a possible indicator.) If it is, you can make life easier for yourself by working out how to get that to work in bridged (modem only) mode.
