Re: D7000v2 connectivity issue

D7000v2 connectivity issue

We've been using my D7000v2 Nighthawk Modem Router for about 18 months.  We've been very happy with it, having only had to reboot it a couple of times.  We're not heavy internet users and it's coped fine with a couple of PCs, various mobiles, printer etc.

However, since Wednesday (23rd September) it keeps dropping all connectivity.  2.4G and 5G Networks drop as does the ethernet connection.  We haven't changed anything to have caused this.  All the LEDs are still lit on the router and it says there's internet, but clearly there isn't.  It's almost as if the router has frozen.

Firmware is the latest (1.0.62) and all devices (Win10, iPhone, Roku, Android) have the same issue.  There's no network being broadcast.  Rebooting solves the problem, but sometimes for only 30 mins.  I tried a factory reset on Friday, which solved the problem for 36 hours.

Any advice welcome.

Re: D7000v2 connectivity issue

I have a D7000v2 and I think my problem is very similar to yours https://community.netgear.com/t5/DSL-Modems-Routers/D7000v2-requires-reboot-at-least-every-7-days/m-...

I think it's likely a firmware issue, I'm thinking about looking at earlier versions but it's going to be a slow task going back and testing one version at a time until it works.

Re: D7000v2 connectivity issue

Thanks.  I've reverted to Firmware V1.0.0.56_1.0.1, which I think I installed a few days before the problem started.  I've also spoke to my ISP and nothing's changed on their side.  I will see what happens over the next few days having reverted.

Re: D7000v2 connectivity issue

An update, a few weeks later.

I've now performed a factory reset and entered ISP settings from scratch, without using a backup.  Originally, this was only at V1.0.0.56_1.0.1 and Genie told me I had the latest firmware.  However, checking online indicated that 1.0.64 was released at the end of September.  After a freeze with 1.0.0.56 I've upgraded to 1.0.0.64, which resulted in the longest run of not freezing for over a month.  However, it crashed this morning, after 5 days.

Situation is better, but still a be flaky.

Re: D7000v2 connectivity issue

I've just upgraded to the V1.0.0.64_1.0.1 firmware (from 62 firmware). The longest run I had with the 62 firmware was 11 days before the router went down.

It will be interesting to see if the new firmware makes it past 11 days...

My record so far, on 64 is 6 days.  It's an improvement, but still pretty annoying.

Re: D7000v2 connectivity issue

Second day of .64 firmware

Decided to have a prod around in the logfiles on the router (/var/log/message)

This can't be healthy, writing 2 errors every 30s to the logs. Perhaps this is symptomatic of an issue that is leading to the exhaustion of the routers internal resources (every 10 days or so in my case)

Thanks for the tip.  I had a look in my router's log file and there's nothing untoward there, just devices connecting.

Best run on .64 so far is 7 days and 7 hours. I wonder if their commercial products in datacenters are this unreliable?

Annoyingly, it's got much worse over the past week.  We have to reboot almost every day after freezers.

Am going to try and engage with Netgear on the issue.

Re: D7000v2 connectivity issue

The guy I spoke to was very helpful, but says it's a software, not hardware issue, so not covered by warranty.  Annoyingly, it's cheaper to buy a new router than pay for tech support cover.

Also spoke to my ISP and there's no issue on their side.  I've tried reinstalling the firmware, so we'll see what happens.!

Re: D7000v2 connectivity issue

I'm still running V1.0.0.64_1.0.1 firmware on the D7000v2. The modem logs are continuously generating sporadic error message but it's still up after nearly 10 days. This is the longest run by a large margin so far.

I am convinced the probem is in the modem firmware (hence the error messages).

The most recent fix I have employed to get the improved up-time is to disable DHCP (this clearly is not going to be a practical solution for everyone). If you are able to set fixed IP addresses for your router clients I would give this a go. I am using an Rpi running Pi-hole as a DHCP server to release to router from DHCP support.

If you try this out let me know if it makes a difference and what your best uptime is.

Still up after nearly 11 days since I disabled DHCP at the last reboot. Sporadically spewing out error messages into the logfiles but remarkably still functioning given the error status is 'Critical'. Latest series of error messages is:

Re: D7000v2 connectivity issue

I've been keeping track of crashes more closely and have only managed a 7 day streak so far.  It usually throws a wobbly after 5 or 6 six days.  If you catch it in time, it's possible to reboot remotely rather than having to power on and off.  I'm convinced it's something to do with the wifi, as it never crashes at night-time when there's no traffic from our devices.

I've just updated the Firmware to V1.0.0.66_1.0.2 so let' see if that fixes the problem.

Wondering where you got this version? The version on the download page is V1.0.0.64_1.0.1.

I logged on to check my router settings in Chrome and there was an alert at the top of the page to update firmware and this was the version available.  I noted that the V1.0.0.64_1.0.1 was the only one on their website.

Re: D7000v2 connectivity issue

Thanks. I logged in to the router and had it check for updates and the 66.1.0.2 was there. Normally Netgear does thing the other way round where the firmware is on the website but doesn't show in the router update function.

I thought 66 had solved the problem, but no.  Crashed in the evening on Christmas Day, after 7 days up.  Crashing once a week is manageable!

Re: D7000v2 connectivity issue

Firmware 66 finally died after a creditable 12 days, best run for a while. I think this is about as good as it's going to get. Time for a reboot.

Interestingly the router is still functioning as a router, that's how I'm managing to type this. This is the stage where all the attached devices start to fail to connect one by one before the complete meltdown. At this stage I cannot login to the router console page and can't connect wirelessly with a couple of other computers on this network and the error messages below are showing up in the log (for the last couple of hours).
