The nighthawk d7800 can now be controlled with Google home. I have updated the firmware to the latest version and went through the instructions (also on above link) but upon testing Google says that my router isn't supported. Is this a US only thing or something?

Read it again? "D7800" and "R7800" are different.

Modem/routers rarely get the same attention as routers. This is one reason why many people prefer to have separate modems and routers. Sadly, Netgear seems to be abandoning the DSL modem market.
If you want this feature, add it to the "wish list".
