D7800 Nighthawk.. Can't login to this damn thing again!

After just over a year of having troubles with this router I thought I post an update with it's ongoing issues regarding logging into the damn thing. I'm only trying to make changes to it's configuration via:  www.routerlogin.net  OR  192.168.1.1

You can even check my first post regarding the same prolem over 1 year ago.. Can't login to new D7800 Nighthawk AC2600

After using many routers over many years I can now honestly say that this thing, or it's firmware is absolutely JUNK. The few times I have been able to access the login page (about 5 times in all.) I've managed to update the FW in the hope that this piece of crap will eventually work.

The latest FW version is V1.0.1.34 And since updating to it I can't login to my router AGAIN. I've tried 4 different browsers (no cookies.) It doesn't matter if im connected via CAT5, wireless etc.. Or I'm using a custom built desktop PC, laptop, tablet or Samsung S8+.

I've tried turning the router on and off multiple times.. Pressing the factory reset button for 30+ secs with the router switched both on AND off. And then after waiting around 3 minutes between each farting about session for the thing to boot, I still can't get into the settings page WITAF!.

All I keep getting is either the standard.. 'You are not connected to your routers WiFi network' (Which I am) .. Or some other varying error page as shown below.

I think this thing cost me around £180 when I bought it, and it's been the biggest POS I've ever had.

NETGEAR.. Will there ever be a FW update for this router that will at least allow access to it's settings/admin page?

In-line pictures in these forums are delayed, pending moderator
approval, so I can't yet see those.  (Plain-old copy+paste is more
efficient.)  As for the "not connected" error page(s), welcome to what
may be the worst error message in the world.  For an explanation, try:

      https://community.netgear.com/t5/x/x/m-p/1365830

Briefly, the idea is that "[www.]routerlogin.net" should point to
your own router, but that's true only if you use your own router for DNS
name resolution.  If, instead, you use some real-world DNS server, then
those names lead you those (misleading, unhelpful) "not connected" error
pages.  Irregardful, you should be able to get to the thing using its IP
address, if you can determine (or guess) that.  Normally, that would be
something like "192.168.1.1", but it can be different.

Assuming that "custom built desktop PC" means some version of
Windows, then, when the default IP address fails, open a Command Prompt
(CMD.EXE) window, run an "ipconfig" command, and copy+paste the result
here.  Or, at least, show the "IPv4 Address" of your computer, and its
"Default Gateway" IP address.  The "Default Gateway" IP address should
be that of the router.

Yes as mentioned.. 192.168.1.1  doesn't work either. It rarely has.

My setup is not by any means complicated.. Basically I've got my PC (connected wirelessly) to my D7800, then that is connected via

a filter to the BT master socket and then onto the fibre line. That's it

I've tried many times.. my laptop connected via CAT5 to the D7800 > Line filter > BT master socket > fibre.

"Yes" what?  "doesn't work" is not a useful problem description.  It
does not say what you did.  It does not say what happened when you did
it.  As usual, showing actual actions with their actual results (error
messages, LED indicators, ...) can be more helpful than vague
descriptions or interpretations.

That's nice, but it tells me approximately nothing about what
actually happens when whatever you're doing "doesn't work".

Re: D7800 Nighthawk.. Can't login to this damn thing again!

Can you not see the numbers I posted .. 192.168.1.1 ?

When 192.168.1.1 or www.routerlogin.net is typed in the address bar of any browser (IE. Opera, Firefox, or Chrome) then Enter is pressed, all I get is a page that says. 404 Not found. Or 'You are not connected to your wireless network (Which I am)

I have attached a screenshot which I hope you can see? I tried to copy then paste the other error pages as you suggested I do

into this text box but they won't paste.

   Useful: "When I do 'A', 'X' happens."

   Less useful: "When I do 'A' or 'B', 'X' or 'Y' happens.

I've already explained how www.routerlogin.net can get you to that
(misleading, unhelpful) "not connected" error page.

Your screen-capture seems to show a good connection to the router
(otherwise, from where would those buttons like "Attached Devices" have
come?), and it shows more than a simple "404" error.

My HTML expertise is weak, so I know nothing, but you seem to be
getting a web page which uses (HTML) frames (which is typical), but two
of its source files are missing.  Hence, you get the left-side buttons
(which seem to be defined in the main "index.htm" file), but you get
_two_ "404" errors: one from the (missing) header file (which, judging
from my D7000, might be "top.html"), and one from the (missing) main
body file (perhaps "basic_wait.htm" and/or "basic_home.htm").

In other words, your router's management web-site files appear to be
seriously corrupt.  I'd try loading the firmware (again) (and resetting
and reconfiguring the router).  If that works, at least initially, then
I'd watch for future trouble.  If that fails to help, then I'd try
another firmware version.

Presumably, if the basic D7800 firmware were this defective, then
these forums would be overflowing with similar complaints, which I have
not observed.  If a fresh firmware load clears this problem, but it
reappears later, then I'd guess that either the firmware is
self-corrupting (unlikely), or else you have a hardware problem (bad
NVRAM) causing the web-site files to decay spontaneously.

Interesting defect.  I haven't seen one like it before.

Re: D7800 Nighthawk.. Can't login to this damn thing again!

I know I have a good connection to the router, I also have a good connection from the router to the internet as I can get online and access webpages perfectly fine. I just can't login to the routers page. So yes I guess as in my first post it sounds like a firmware issue. My router has always had this temperamental login issue since it was new, and having seen a few other posts ragarding similar login issues I just thought perhaps future FW's would erradicate the issue.

I've used two or three previous FW's on this router and all have similar login difficulties, however the latest one V1.0.1.34 has been the worst.

I'll try rolling back the FW but when I'll be able to do this is anyones guess, depending on when I'm able to access the login/user/password page again.

Otherwise I'll open this baby up and heat cycle test it just to see if this induces data loss.. If there's no luck I'll buy another router. Then I'll desolder the main IC's from this ones PCB and see what's going on if possible within the bios/FW/flash ROMs.

Re: D7800 Nighthawk.. Can't login to this damn thing again!

Just for the record, note that, aside from the (misleading,
unhelpful) "not connected" error pages, "Can't login" was a particularly
misleading (non-)description of the problem.  You _were_ getting logged
into the thing, but its little brain was so scrambled that its web site
was approximately useless.  (But not inaccessible.)  Perhaps when those
in-line pictures get approved, they'll be as helpful as the later
attached screen-capture.

When dealing with the invisible, a precise, accurate description of
actual observations is often much more useful than a (sloppy) analysis
of the underlying problem (like "Can't login").
