D7800 Nighthawk X4S, setting up as a network extender

I have just upgraded to TalkTalk faster fibre and am now using their WiFi Hub as the router. I want to use my D7800 as a WiFi network extender which I understand can be done. I understand that to do this I have to set up a “bridge” as per https://kb.netgear.com/24105/What-is-bridge-mode-and-how-do-I-set-it-up-on-my-Nighthawk-router

I have tried  at least 10 times with no success , what am I doing wrong ? Thanks in advance

Do you mean a PL1000[vX] and PLW1000[vX], or what?  Connecting what?

I included "(or equivalent)" in "a wired (or equivalent) connection"
for a reason.

If you have a PL1000 connected to your router, then I'd expect that
you could use another PL1000 to connect the D7800 as a wireless access
point, and I'd expect its wireless-network performance to beat that of a
PLW1000.  As usual, many things are possible.

What, exactly, does "WiFi network extender" mean to you, and
how, exactly, did you come to understand that this "can be done"?

One thing which should work would be to configure the D7800 as a
wireless access point.  Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your
model number, and look for Documentation.  Get the User Manual.  Look
for "Set Up the Modem Router as a WiFi Access Point Only".  This mode
requires a wired (or equivalent) connection between the main router and
the D7800-as-WAP.

Look for "Set Up a WiFi Bridge" in the User Manual.  As the picture
there tries to show, this uses a wireless connection between the main
router and the D7800-as-wireless_client.  But, in this mode, the D7800
is strictly a client (consumer) of the main-router's wireless network,
and does not extend it.

What you may want is a feature which the D7800 seems not to offer.
Use the procedure above to fetch the User Manual for an R7000.  In that
manual, look for "Set Up a Wireless Distribution System".

The R7000 User Manual also offers better pictures than the D7800 User

Manual under "Use the Router as a Wireless Access Point", if you're
interested in that mode.

Thanks , OK I know what I want but maybe I interpreted the user guide incorrectly. The diagram for the access point shows a cable connecting the base router (internet gateway) to the other router. What I want to achieve is to use the D7800 as a wireless network extender in the same way that a EX6120 would . Is this possible ?

   Yes, it does.

That's still an ambiguous description of what you want to do.  Fetch
the EX6120 User Manual, and look for "Use the Extender in Access Point
Mode".

> [...] Is this possible ?

If you mean what's described under "Use the Extender in Extender
Mode", then I believe not.  You could do it with an R7000, but many
other models (including D7000, D7800, and even R7800) don't offer that
feature.

Another possibility would be to use a pair of Powerline adapters to
connect the the main router and the D7800-as-WAP, using the power wiring
in the building instead of a real Ethernet cable.  Such adapters are
offered by Netgear and other vendors.

Re: D7800 Nighthawk X4S, setting up as a network extender

Apologies for not being too clear on my target solution, but the jargon confuses me, but I believe and with your support I have a solution. ! I have a pair of PLW1000 already, but I think I will get another PLW1000 unit rather than try to use the D7800 as a WAP as I don’t want (or need) cables

thanks for putting up with me 🙂
