D7800 SOS/ROC NBN Updates

Hello all,

I recently received an email from MATE notifying me that due to the SOS/ROC updates from NBN my current router (Netgear D7800) wont work. I was told that a firmware update may be available to make it compatible. I was able to update my router to version 1.0.1.68 however I didn't see anything saying the router would now be compatible with the updates.

Just wondering if anyone can confirm this new firmware will make the router compatible or if there is another update required.

Thanks,
Cade

NBN strikes again. Join the club:

I have seen nothing from Netgear to suggest that it even knows about this issue, let alone that it is working in the case.

The pace of progress in DSL modem/routers is slow. I'll see if we can smoke out an official response.

Word from Netgear is that the D7000v1, D6220 and D6400 modem routers are compatible with SOS and ROC.

No news yet on whether there will be an update for your hardware.

I emailed NetGear on this topic and unfortunately the D7800 is not compatible and there will be no firmware update to make it compatible.

this is so frustrating.... about 30 odd days notice by tpg and no real customer information other than to look for your own solution..

and guess what,, nothing useful on netgear sites either,,, but you can look at the nbn specs if your a specialist you may get some insights... all I got was BS,,, When %g gets to me I am out of NBN  ... WHAT A SCREW YOU moment....

Re: D7800 SOS/ROC NBN Updates

Tell me about it. I bit the bullet and purchased a modem from my ISP so I could bridge it and then use the nighthawk as a router but it won’t go into router only mode.. so frustrating

I did explain how to go about this. It is a very straightforward process.

Perhaps you missed it:

Re: SOS and ROC Updates - NETGEAR Communities

Visit the support pages:

Support | NETGEAR

Feed in your model number and check the documentation for your hardware.

Check the section in the manual Set Up the Modem Router for Cable or Fiber Service.

If you have been messing around with the modem/router, trying to get it to work, wipe everything a reset and start from  scratch.

If it doesn't work, come back with details of what you are doing and where it goes wrong.

Re: D7800 SOS/ROC NBN Updates

I have a few different Netgear Nighthawk router models in active use. The fact that support of a technical question like this is left in the hands of the community is pretty poor form from such a large company. All credit to the people from the community doing their unpaid best to answer a public in panic over losing their internet.

With so many people wanting to know if their model is or can be made compatible, I suggest a running list be added to this thread (because of the useful title). Simply router model and if it is/isn't compatible after a firmware upgrade as the info becomes known. Hopefully that will lead to less individual threads that the community have to answer.

There was the beginnings of a list in one of the various messages on the topic.

See above:

It might also be worth visiting this local site:

The SOS/ROC think is not unique to Netgear. More a general NBN thing. Ideally, ISPs should maintain lists of compatible modems. There seem to be too many for any modem maker to know who has made the change and when.

Re: D7800 SOS/ROC NBN Updates

The fact that netgear are silent on this matter and there is no way to contact them without paying almost $200 for support is disgraceful.

I hope those people who have purchased in the last 2 years go to the ACCC if it turns out not to work as this modem was clearly advertised as "NBN Ready"

Re: D7800 SOS/ROC NBN Updates SAR

Ok, so....

I have contacted iiNet who provides my internet connection. My reason for contacting them is that my internet was dropping in and out....... in and out...... in and out...... (Example... would connect for 5 seconds and then drop out for 3 seconds over and over again)

They informed me after runnings some tests that I do not have some SRA setting enabled. I searched everywhere and could not find or see anything to do with this "SRA" thing.

Anyway, long story short, NETGEAR and iiNET are both ducking and weaving here as to who is to blame. I am not wanting to buy a new netgear device because NETGEAR will not respond to ANYONE on these forums.

Can NETGEAR just give me a simple answer, does the D7800 support SRA or not? If not, i will go purchase another router.

No. (I think you mean SAR.)

You do not need another "router". The D7800 is a modem/router. You can still use the router bit.

Your Internet service provider has broken its service. It made changes to the technology that killed the modem bit of your equipment. The ISP should mend things.

You should demand that it provides you with a new modem that works with its new implementation of DSL. (Netgear is by no means the only brand that has been hit with this change.) You can then use that as the front end for your D7800 in router mode.

.... NETGEAR will not respond to ANYONE on these forums.

Your question has been answered several times in recent months.

Re: D7800 SOS/ROC NBN Updates SAR

Finally time to get rid on my POS Netgear D7800 Nighthawk.

Been in IT for over a decade, please don't suggest there is some wrong setting or I've done something wrong within my setup.

Wireless CONSTANTLY dropping out on all channels, Router randomly freezing and needing a hard reset to fix, lack of NBN compatible features, NO word from Netgear on any of the issue/s raised on their forums by hundreds of people all with the same problems.

I look at this NBN change as a blessing in disguise. Go with another manufacturer, stay far far away from Netgear and never return.

I'll can comfortably say I will never ever again give Netgear another dollar. I will also never recommend them to anyone.

Hey mate, do you have any recommendations that I could get to finally get rid of my 7800? ABB were no help and I'm running out of time to get something new.

Cheers

When an ISP messes around with its Internet service, it would be a good idea to ask it for a list of modems that would be compatible with its network technology. Then you have someone to shout at if they screw it up again.

Remember, you can still use a D7800 as a router if you put a modem in front of it.

They broke your existing hardware. So you should ask them to replace it with something that works. Why should you pay for the ISP's poor service?

"They broke your existing hardware. So you should ask them to replace it with something that works. Why should you pay for the ISP's poor service?"

I understand what you are saying, but the poor service comes from Netgear. The D7800 chipset should be capable of SOS and ROC, but the firmware update isn't anywhere to be seen.

NETGEAR advertise the router as 'NBN Ready' and it ultimately is their responsibility to ensure that compatibility is achieved otherwise they will be breaching ACCC Consumer Law.

Like I mentioned above though, this is a great time to finally get away from the pain and misery my D7800 has caused me.... never again.

Afraid not.

Netgear has implemented SOS/ROC where the chipset supports it, the D7000v1, D6220 and D6400.

The D7800 chipset doesn't.
