D7800 constantly and regularly logs "[Internet connected]"

Hi

I've had a D7800 (up to date firmware) connected to TalkTalk via VDSL for about 10 months on an 80/20 contract.

During that ttime its been pretty steady. I'm only about 150 m from the huawei cab and have previously got around 75meg down and 19 up

Stats show:

0 collisions on wan port

Line attenuation: 10db up and 10.5db down

Noise Margin: 6db up and 7 down

Problem.

Over the past few days speed has dropped to around 45meg

Stats show the connection speed as 60/20 (not 80/20 as before)

The logs show  regular connection events. When dropped in to excel and sorted for time and subtracted to show interval they look like this:

[Internet connected] IP address: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Tuesday, June 25, 2019 06:27:07 00:07:30
[Internet connected] IP address: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Tuesday, June 25, 2019 06:34:37 00:07:30
[Internet connected] IP address: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Tuesday, June 25, 2019 06:42:07 00:07:30
[Internet connected] IP address: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Tuesday, June 25, 2019 06:49:38 00:07:31
[Internet connected] IP address: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Tuesday, June 25, 2019 06:57:08 00:07:30

The connection is happening every 7mnis 30 secs. Almost as regualr as clockwork, with just a few exceptions - at 15mins.

TT Support (haha I think thats called an oxymoron!) claim its the modem reconnecting constantly causing the speed drop.

Of course its not their kit so they dont wanna know.

I havent yet tried a reset.

I have stuck an old TT Huawei on the line for now to appease TT support. Line speed still showing no improvment after 12 hours but I guess dlm might take a while to catch up.

So, does anyone have any ideas as to why my D7800 might be reconnecting itself exactly every 7mins 30secs?

Thanks for any input

Gene

Re: D7800 constantly and regularly logs "[Internet connected]"

I have current firmware 0.47 as shown on product page:

https://www.netgear.com/support/product/D7800#download

But I just came across this:

https://kb.netgear.com/30603/D7800-Firmware-Version-1-0-0-48

This isnt linked from product support page and router thinks its currently on latest.

Download page does say its for enhancements to improve speed on UK/BT - which could be relevant.

Can anybody comment on this upgrade please

tnx

Gene

Re: D7800 constantly and regularly logs "[Internet connected]"

Hi

I'm just bumping this thread with logs from this morning to ask again if anyone has any ideas on why my D7800 says its consantly connecting to the internet every 7mins 30secs exactly. Is it even a problem?

The ime diff is shown in last column of abbreviated logs:

Re: D7800 constantly and regularly logs "[Internet connected]"

I updated fw to .1.56 last night. This has made almost no difference. The only slight change is that there are now a couple of periods of ~52 mins, and 15mins - these periods are mulitples of 7mins 30secs.

I note that DLM bins are 15 min intervals - is this relevant?

TalkTalk are of the opinion that this is not an issue with their kit, but that the reconnects will cause further DLM issues (it was reset a few days ago). They will not help because of non-TT router.

So unless Netgear have any solution I have a partially useless D7800.

I'll be grateful for any input.

Re: D7800 constantly and regularly logs "[Internet connected]"

Did you reset the router to factory settings after the firmware flash?

New firmware sometimes introduces changes that are not compatible with the old configuration.

So while it isn't guaranteed to fix problems a factory reset is the first thing to try if you have issues with new firmware.

This is a nuisance because you then have to reconfigure the device all over again.

You can backup your settings before you reset and restore them later. But that may just bring back the fault. Then again, at least you will know if the reset fixed the problem.

Probably the world's worst ISP. I wouldn't trust them to know what day of the week it is, let alone what is going on on the network. TalkTalk exists mostly to make BT look less crap.

Re: D7800 constantly and regularly logs "[Internet connected]"

@michaelkenward  thank you very much for your input.

Yes I did a full reset (no backup) and have done a couple times previously.

If I'm not mistaken you've given opinion here before that Talktalk are the "worlds worst isp".

Whilst that might or might not be true they are also a major UK isp, and as I understand it with fttc in UK its all OpenReach kit regardless of provider.

In any case slagging TT off further without relevant technical reason isnt going to help find a solution here so I'll pass on that.
