DGN 2200 v3 not working as Access Point

Hi there, I'm trying to set up my DGN 2200 v3 as an Access Point connecting it via Ethernet to my ISP's modem+router. I followed the instructions mentioned in another thread but no luck. I am not able to connect to the ISP router and to Internet from behind the DGN 2200

In particular, a couple of things seems to be odd:

1. The light on the Ethernet port connected to the router is red

2. I manage to connect to the DGN 2200's IP address from behind the ISP router, but, as I mentioned above, not the other way round.

Any suggestion?

Thanks

"connecting it" how, exactly?  Hint: If a device has multiple
Ethernet ports, then "connected to device" is not enough detail.

What is your "my ISP's modem+router"?

> [...] I followed the instructions mentioned in another thread [...]

_Which_ "another thread"?  This place is littered with one "another
thread" after another "another thread", ...

> [...] but no luck.

None of that is a useful problem description. It does not say what
you did.  It does not say what happened when you did it.  As usual,
showing actual actions with their actual results (error messages, LED
indicators, ...) can be more helpful than vague descriptions or
interpretations.

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look
for Documentation.  Get the User Manual.  Read.  When I do that for a
DGN2200v3, I don't see a simple mode option for use as a wireless access
point, which suggests that the details of your "the instructions
mentioned in another thread" might matter.  One such set of instructions
may be found here:

      https://community.netgear.com/t5/x/x/m-p/1463500

That's written for a C6300-as-WAP, but the steps are about the same for
any other router (any make/model) which lacks a one-step WAP option.

"connect" how?  From where?  What is "the DGN 2200's IP address"?
"the other way round"?  You lost me.

Re: DGN 2200 v3 not working as Access Point

Right, let's try to get it straight.

I got my ISP router (Technicolor TG 789 VAC v2) connected to the internet.

I also got an AP to get WiFi on my upper floor (Linksys WAG120 N) connected via Ethernet, i.e. Technicolor's LAN port no.1 to Linksys' LAN port no.1. Linksys AP has IP address 192.168.1.199.

This configuration works perfectly, i.e. I manage to connect to the Internet from my Mac connected to the Linksys either via Ethernet or via the AP own WiFi (I created a separate WiFi from the Technicolor's one).

However, I wanted to replace the latter with a DGN 2200 v3 (firmware 1.1.00.25), since it would have higher wireless speed.

Now, the procedure I followed to set up the DGN 2200 is very similar to the one indicated in your link:

https://community.netgear.com/t5/x/x/m-p/1463500

i.e.

1) I powered the DGN 2200 and did a reset with the button below it, to be sure to start the setup from scratch

2) I disconnected my Mac from all networks and connected it to the DGN 2200, i.e. via Ethernet to LAN port no.2, with routerlogin.net  to enter its configuration page.

3) I set up the DGN 2200 IP address as 192.168.1.199 in order to be the same as the former Linksys AP. (subnet mask 255.255.255.0 as the former Linksys AP.

4) I disabled DGN 2200 DHCP.

5) I quit setup, enter 192.168.1.199 in Safari. Setup page opened successfully.

I did not limit the DHCP range on the Technicolor router nor I did any further change on the Technicolor since I was just substituting the Linksys with the DGN 2200. By the way, I checked from the Technicolor router setup page if there were other devices with IP 192.168.1.199, there was none, so everything looked ok.

Now, as mentioned before, this is what I did to test the connection.

1) I connected the DGN 2200 to the Technicolor router as the former AP, i.e. router LAN port no.1 to DGN 2200 LAN port no.1, same cable.

2) I connected my Mac to DGN 2200 via Ethernet to DGN 2200 LAN port no.2.

3) I restarted both the routers and my Mac.

4) The LAN port no.1 light on the DGN 2200 was amber. I read the manual, it indicates connection speed below 10 MBps, which does not make sense since it is the same Ethernet connection as the Linksys' which I tested few moments before as 44 MBps on speedtest.net

5) Within the Network setup page in MacOS, below Ethernet, the connection light was green. My Mac IP was assigned correctly and the Technicolor router IP address was correct, 192.168.1.254.

6) I tried to reach google.com in Safari on my Mac, no way. (Safari could not open to the page, this was the exact message).

7) I tried to reach DGN 2200 setup page, input 192.168.1.199 in Safari, no way. (Safari could not open the page).

😎 I disconnected the Mac from the DGN 2200 and connected it via Ethernet to the Technicolor LAN port no.2. Tried to reach DGN 2200 setup page, input 192.168.1.199 in Safari, the setup page opened successfully, so DGN 2200 IP was correctly assigned.

Sorry for my long answer, you asked me for the very details so I tried to be as nitty gritty as possible even risking to results obnoxious.

Thanks.

> 3) I set up the DGN 2200 IP address as 192.168.1.199 [...]

Which "the DGN 2200 IP address"?  The DGN2200 has a WAN/Internet IP
address and a LAN IP address.  For use as a WAP, you'd need to set its
LAN IP address.  (You're not using its WAN/Internet port, so the IP
address of that interface shouldn't matter.)

> 5) I quit setup, enter 192.168.1.199 in Safari. Setup page opened
> successfully.

That suggests that you set the DGN2200 LAN IP address, as you should
have.  What was the IP address of the Mac (Ethernet interface) when you
did that?

> 4) The LAN port no.1 light on the DGN 2200 was amber. [...]

Not a good sign.  What does the TG-789 say about that connection?
Any change if you disconnect and reconnect that cable?

> [...] My Mac IP was assigned correctly [...]

What was that IP address?  (What does "correctly" mean to you?)

As I read this, you could get to the DGN2200 management site at
"192.168.1.199", from your Mac, connected to a DGN2200 LAN port (with
some unknown IP address), but only _before_ you restarted everyone, not
after the restart?  I don't have a good explanation for that.

> 😎 I disconnected the Mac from the DGN 2200 and connected it via
> Ethernet to the Technicolor LAN port no.2. [...]

Again, what's the Mac's (Ethernet) IP address when you did that?

You seem to be doing things correctly (or, at least, as I would).

> Sorry for my long answer, [...] even risking to results obnoxious.

Fear not.  I can tolerate excessive (relevant) detail.  I'm much
better at ignoring an excess than I am at guessing what's missing.

Re: DGN 2200 v3 not working as Access Point

Which "the DGN 2200 IP address"?

LAN IP address.

What was the IP address of the Mac (Ethernet interface) when you
did that?

192.168.1.X, don't remember.

What does the TG-789 say about that connection?

Strangely enough, the TG-789  "Connected devices" section in the setup page, when the AP was the Linksys, showed only the devices connected to the AP together with their IPs and the Ethernet port on the TG-789 to which the AP is connected, BUT NOT THE AP ITSELF.

When I connect the DGN2200, nothing is shown on the page.

Any change if you disconnect and reconnect that cable?

Same if I disconnect and connect again.

> [...] My Mac IP was assigned correctly [...]

What was that IP address?  (What does "correctly" mean to you?)

That the Mac IP is 192.168.1.X, i.e. same subnet of the TG-789 and the router address is shown correctly as 192.168.1.254, i.e. the DHCP assigned correctly the IP to the Mac which, in turn, recognize 192.168.1.254 as the router.

As I read this, you could get to the DGN2200 management site at
"192.168.1.199", from your Mac, connected to a DGN2200 LAN port (with
some unknown IP address), but only _before_ you restarted everyone, not
after the restart?  I don't have a good explanation for that.

Correct, it means I could connect to the DGN2200 when it was connected only to my Mac, i.e. not to the TG-789.

When I connect DGN-2200 to the TG-789, my Mac can't connect to DGN-2200.

The restart is not an issue, the connection to the router is.

> 😎 I disconnected the Mac from the DGN 2200 and connected it via
> Ethernet to the Technicolor LAN port no.2. [...]

Again, what's the Mac's (Ethernet) IP address when you did that?

Again another random 192.168.1.X, with router 192.168.1.254 correctly shown.

You seem to be doing things correctly (or, at least, as I would).

This is what is driving me crazy, it is just a couple of setup steps as in the Linksys which worked beautifully.
