DSL light amber (reposted)

Hi. I hope you can hep.

I bought a D7800 as drop-in replacement for a DGND-3300. I put it all together as per the quick start instructions.

I initally used the microfilter and cable from the previous router. However the DSL light (twisted flax symbol) stayed amber.

I checked the connections and they were all fine.

So I changed the microfilter and cable to that supplied with the D7800 and still an amber DSL light.

I went on the Netgear support site and it said I needed to plug the router into a modem. However the quick start guide specifically shows a set up diagram where the router is plugged into a microfilter and not a modem.

Out of the need to contact this community and also to get the internet back, I dropped the DGND-3300 back in with the microfilter and cable from the d7800. This is working fine.

Please advise on getting the DSL light to be solid white.

Many thanks in advance.

I would not expect that to matter, assuming that you connect the
modem+router to the right hole.

The non-psychics in your audience may have no idea what you found "on
the Netgear support site", or to what it might have applied.  If you
have DSL service, then you should probably connect the new D7800 exactly
as you had connected the DGND3300.  (Curiosity: Was that a DGND3300[v1]
or a DGND3300v2?  Look at the product label.)

What are the DSL-related parameters on the DGND3300[vX] (BASIC >
Internet)?  How did you configure the DSL parameters on the D7800?
Firmware version on the D7800?

With the D7800 connected, go to its management web site
("routerlogin.net", or whatever), and ADVANCED > ADVANCED Home :
(Internet Port) Show Statistics.  Do you see more than zeros in the
"ADSL Link" statistics?  (That is, do you have a good physical DSL
link?)  Have you asked your ISP about this?

Does your DSL connection use PPPoA or PPPoE?  Did you provide the
correct PPP username and password in the DSL-related parameters?  Are
there any special characters in those PPP credentials?

Does "no joy" mean that the reset operation didn't occur, or that it
did occur, but didn't solve your problem?  As usual, showing actual
actions (commands, code, ...) with their actual results (error messages,
...) can be more helpful than vague descriptions or interpretations.

Re: DSL light amber (reposted)

Hi

Sorry for the vague information. In replying to your post I realised I was looking at the manual for the R7800 and not the D7800. Oops.

Anyways if says if I get a solid amber light, I should try the reset and if that doesn't work I need to contact negear support. So I will try that tomorrow.

Re: DSL light amber (reposted)

As you have an Internet connection, you could see if it is possible to update the firmware on the D7800.

You do not need an Internet connection to do that.

If you can make a wired Ethernet connection from a PC to the modem/router, you may be able to get into the browser graphical user interface (GUI). Then you can check the manual for instructions on a manual firmware update.

Just to confirm it is the DSL light that is amber? Not one of the others?

Re: DSL light amber (reposted)

The DSL connection should be direct to the wall. The filters are for phones that share the same line so that you don't hear any DSL whine when using the phone.

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in "D7800" as the model
number, and look for Documentation.  Get the "Installation Guide".  Look
for "2. Plug In Your Modem Router", read the text, and look at the
picture.  Or, "Figure 7. Modem router cabling for DSL service" in the
User Manual.

With a two-hole DSL filter, the "DSL" port _does_ go direct to the
"Line" port.  Of course, if there is no phone, then there's no need for

a filter.

   Still true.

More important in this contect, it keeps the phone from absorbing the
high-frequency DSL signal.

But I'm sure that we're all grateful for the misleading distraction.
