Does CM1000 work with Centurylink.net Fiber Optic Gigabit Internet service

I have tried to research this particular modem to replace Centurylinks , C3000Z.

But I can't seem to find if this CM1000 modem works with Centurylink Fiber Optic Gigabit internet?

I just purchased this modem and haven't opened it yet, if it isn't compatible with Centurylink,

I need to know what modem is?

How, exactly, were you using the C3000Z?  Do you have DSL service, or
an ONT with an Ethernet connection, or what, exactly?

A Netgear model CMxxxx is a DOCSIS cable modem.  So far as I know,
CenturyLink does not provide cable-TV-type service.  (It's also a modem,
without a router, making it an especially poor choice to replace a
C3000Z DSL modem+router, whether or not it's the right kind of modem,
which it apparently isn't.)

> I just purchased this modem and haven't opened it yet, [...]

The "haven't opened" part of that is probably good news.

Ask CenturyLink?  (Mention "DOCSIS" when you do.)  No one here (you,
especially) seems to know enough about your CenturyLink service, and how
you should connect it to anything.

Re: Does CM1000 work with Centurylink.net Fiber Optic Gigabit Internet service

The C3000Z is Centurylinks Modem/Wifi Router that I am replacing with the CM1000 and a Netgear Wifi Router?

My service is the ONT Fiber Optic they hadn't laid the wires yet when I ordered the service and it took them about a month?

I want to replace the C3000Z with the CM1000 and Router Netgear Nighthawk AC2100 Smart WiFi Fast 4K Streaming (R7200-100NAS)

I keep getting conflicting accounts where it says on one site its NOT compatible and then on another site that I can use it?

The C3000Z is defective and Centurylink actually expects me to pay them $200 to replace it ?

I would prefer to own my equipment.

I have the Gigabit , Fiber Optic service , I was previously a customer of Comcast , enough said there!!!!!

I keep hearing that Centurylink is Bonded and that is why its not compatible with this modem, or something like that?

Very confusing?

I don't know what other information you need, please just ask?

Thanks for the help...

You might be, if using the CM1000 made any sense, but it doesn't.

> My service is the ONT Fiber Optic [...]

Then you'd seem to need a router, but not a modem, and certainly not
a cable(-TV) modem like the CM1000.

> [...] R7200-100NAS [...]

I don't know of any reason that an R7200 would not work, but you
might ask CenturyLink.  You might also want to get instructions from
CenturyLink on how to configure your own router with their fiber
service, and then consult the R7200 User Manual to ensure that any
exotic required settings (VLAN ID = 201, perhaps, ...) actually exist on
the R7200.

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in the model number, and look
for Documentation.  Get the User Manual.  Read.

> [...] it says on one site its NOT compatible and then on another site

With my weak psychic powers, I can't even guess what you might be
reading where.

> The C3000Z is defective and Centurylink actually expects me to pay
> them $200 to replace it ?

Nothing to do with me.  I have no information on any problems with
your C3000Z, and no information on what you tried to do with it.  A
quick Web search suggests that the "C3000Z includes a dedicated Gigabit
Ethernet WAN Port", which suggests that it at least has a chance of
working as a router when connected to an ONT (and configured properly).

> [...] I was previously a customer of Comcast [...]

With Comcast, a CM1000 might have made some sense.

> I keep hearing that Centurylink is Bonded and that is why its not

Don't know where you're hearing things, either.

Some levels of CenturyLink DSL service use a bonded line pair, which
rules out any Netgear DSL modem(+router):

      https://kb.netgear.com/30296

But that's DSL, not fiber with an ONT, so not relevant here.

What about "its dsl"?  Or did you mean "it's DSL"?  "it"?

If you have DSL service, then a suitable DSL modem should work.  If
you have cable-TV service, then a suitable cable modem (perhaps even a
CM1000) should work.

> My service is the ONT Fiber Optic [...]

Presumably, you don't need a modem of any kind for that.  Because the
"C3000Z includes a dedicated Gigabit Ethernet WAN Port", you can ignore
its DSL modem section, and use it as a router.  (With or without some
modem or other, depending.)

@Retired_Member wrote:

What is Centurylink delivering to you in the way of Internet technology?

This doesn't help me much:

Fiber Internet | CenturyLink Fiber Gigabit

It doesn't say how the Internet gets to you. Perhaps they use different technologies depending in where you are.

The trouble with the word "fiber" is that everything Internet has fibre somewhere. So ISPs use the term to describe various different Internet technologies. For example, I have DSL service from BT in the UK. It has fibre, but it stops in a box up the road. This is often called fibre to the cabinet, or FTTC.

True "fibre" brings an optical fibre to your front door. (The techies call it "fibre to the premises". or FTTP) You then get a box indoors called an optical network terminator (ONT).  If you have one of those, then you don't nee a modem, that ONT does the same job. It has an Ethernet port that you can connect to a router.

Most routers will work with that sort of service. Take your pick, depending on the features you want, and your budget.

You usually need genuine FTTP to get Gigabit speeds.

If that is what you are getting, forget about this bit:

@Retired_Member wrote:

You won't need the CM1000. That is a cable modem, it will not work as a  modem with any flavour of DSL or true fibre service.

@Retired_Member wrote:

It really is best to ask Centurylink what you need.

Ask them about the "modem" that you get with this service. If it is an ONT, you don't need a  modem.

Then ask why the C3000Z does NOT work. If it is because it is the wrong technology, then the CM1000 might not work either.

Is this the thing you have:

Using your Zyxel C3000Z modem | CenturyLink

The C3000Z is a "VDSL2 bonding AC2200 Gateway". The giveaway is the "bonded" word. Netgear doesn't make anything like that.

Ask Centurylink if it uses a cable modem, a DSL modem (bonded or otherwise) or an ONT.

If you just want to noodle around seeking other chat about the different types of stuff people use with Centurylink try this:

Search - NETGEAR Communities – Centurylink

If Centurylink has a user forum, that would also be a good place to seek informed help.

One of us is not answering questions.  Look for "?".  He also seems
not to be reading, generally.

> 1 the C3000Z is defective and needs replacing.

If you say so.  I have no evidence of any problems with it.  I also
have no information on how it's connected to anything, or how it's
behaving.

> 2 CM1000 is the modem I would like to replace it with also the R7200
> as the wifi router.

The CM1000 is a cable modem.  The C3000Z is a combination DSL modem
and router.  A CM1000 does not replace any part of a C3000Z.  An R7200
is a router, which might work as a replacement for the router section of
a C3000Z, but, if you're using the DSL modem section of the C3000Z, then
you'd still need a DSL modem, and a CM1000 is still not a DSL modem.

But I still have no clear description of how you connected your
C3000Z to anything.

> I have Centurylink Fiber Gigabit Internet service.

With an ONT?  Hence an Ethernet connection to CenturyLink?  So you're
not using any modem for anything?  Or what?

> > My service is the ONT Fiber Optic [...]
>
>    Presumably, you don't need a modem of any kind for that. [...]

Still true, so far as I know.

> I would like to know if this CM1000 will work with my particular
> Centurylink Fiber Gigabit Internet service?

How much do you expect the non-psychics it your audience to know
about your "particular Centurylink Fiber Gigabit Internet service?

If CenturyLink gives you an ONT with an Ethernet connection, then you
would not need any modem.  That means that you would not need a CM1000
cable modem.  It's not complicated.

What, exactly, led you to the CM1000 in the first place?

> I repeat the C3000Z does NOT work [...]

I repeat that I still have no idea how you arrived at that
conclusion.  I don't know what you did with your C3000Z.  I don't know
what happened when you did whatever you did.  Given that you seem
adamant about involving a wholly inappropriate cable modem in your
non-cable Internet connection, it's far from obvious that your
(unsupported) evaluation of your C3000Z is good for anything.

"NOT work" is not a useful problem description.  It does not say what
you did.  It does not say what happened when you did it.  As usual,
showing actual actions (commands) with their actual results (error
messages, LED indicators, ...) can be more helpful than vague
descriptions or interpretations.

If "NOT work" is all we know about the C3000Z, then it's far from
clear that replacing it with _anything_ will solve your actual problem.

> [...] I am trying to replace the C3000Z with the CM1000 and the R7200.

I repeat that that makes no sense, especially the part about the
CM1000.

Re: Does CM1000 work with Centurylink.net Fiber Optic Gigabit Internet service

Maybe I am in the wrong forum I wasn't looking for help connecting a modem to the internet or wanting to fix the C3000Z?

I know that the C3000Z is a combination modem and wifi router and it connects to my ONT with a ethernet cable?

I also know how to connect the CM1000 and the R7200 to the internet that is not my problem!

I want to replace the defective C3000Z with my own hardware I have never preferred the ISP's hardware.

I picked the CM1000 because it is a Gigabit modem and for a large home and I want to know if it will work

with myCenturylink Fiber Gigabit Internet service or not?

I don't need any help other than someone ANYONE answering that one question will it work for the above ISP?

If you don't know please just tell me and I will try to find someone who can answer that one question?

I don't understand what all this information you need , ISP's either support Netgear or it doesn't ?

I don't need anymore information than that.

You seem to want to diagnose the problem with the C3000Z and I do not want that I want my own hardware

and I do not want anymore of Centurylinks hardware , who do you work for Centurylink or Netgear, because

I don't understand why you can't answer if the CM1000 will work for Centurylink Fiber Gigabit Internet service?

Re: Does CM1000 work with Centurylink.net Fiber Optic Gigabit Internet service

Right forum, possibly. Wrong question, probably.

If you have an ONT, you don't need a modem.

If you put one between a modem and a router, it can work, but doing so is pointless and quite likely to cause problems.

If you don't understand the answers provided, you can't blame the people who offered them.

Re: Does CM1000 work with Centurylink.net Fiber Optic Gigabit Internet service

Okay forget the ONT, I am not sure about that but I am sure i will need a modem and i bought the CM1000 .
Why is it the wrong question to ask if a particular Netgear product is compatible with a certain ISP ?
If you don't know the answer just say so but don't make me seem like I am asking the wrong question because the question is I bought one of your modems and I don't know if it will work with my ISP and I stupidly thought Netgear would know?
And you still haven't answered that one question.
I need to replace the modem and wifi router , will the ones I posted work? You seem to want more information than is necessary to answer that question?
This shouldn't be that complicated.

> I don't understand [...]

You're right about that, at least.

> [...] what all this information you need , ISP's either support
> Netgear or it doesn't ?

Not really.  Some ISPs use different types of technology, and Netgear
supplies devices which use different types of technology.  For example,
CenturyLink offers DSL, for which you'd need a DSL modem, and
(apparently) fiber, for which you would need no modem.  What they do
_not_ offer, so far as I know, is any kind of DOCSIS cable-TV-type
service, for which a CM1000 might be useful.

> [...] who do you work for Centurylink or Netgear, [...]

Neither.  I'm not trying to sell you anything.  I have been trying to
puzzle out what you actually need, but, given the way you ignore simple
questions seeking basic information, I'm about to stop caring very soon.

> Okay forget the ONT, [...]

Why?  Do you _not_ have an ONT?  Please make up your mind.

> [...] I am not sure about that but I am sure i will need a modem and i

What, exactly, makes you so "sure" that you "will need a modem"?  You
seem to be the only person in this discussion who believes that.

> [...] don't make me seem like I am asking the wrong question [...]

Even if you are?  Ok by me, but it'll limit the discussion pretty
severely.

> [...] You seem to want more information than is necessary to answer
> that question?

You seem to believe that you know which information is relevant or
necessary.  Clearly, you're wrong.

> This shouldn't be that complicated.

Then perhaps you should stop making it that way.  Perhaps you should
try to learn more, and, until you do, be "sure" about less.  Just a
suggestion.  I don't want to twist your arm.

Re: Does CM1000 work with Centurylink.net Fiber Optic Gigabit Internet service

@Retired_Member , you should really listen to @antinode  and @michaelkenward . If you have fiber that provides an ethernet cable connection you don't need a modem. Just take the ethernet cable straight from the "converter" to the WAN port on your R7000. If CL requires you to provide login credentials you can specify them in the R7000, if they don't just click the option in the R7000 that says your ISP doesn't require a login. Either way when you connect the DHCP at CL will assign you an IP address and DNS services. I can't see that you require a modem??

I was clearly mistaken in trying to get a simple answer to a hardware question.

I don't know if your American or not but your "skills" at resolving this issue are seriously lacking and actually blaming me for your inability to answer my simple question is highly unprofessional.

I really like Netgear hardware and will probably buy it in the future but the customer service I will NEVER attempt this complete waste of time again.

I hope you feel superior in the knowledge that you couldn't answer my question and then blaming me for your ignorance , I hope Netygear knows how your driving customers to other brands after such rude and unprofessional behavior.

Be that way. I retired from CL in Utah after 30 years in Information technology data center operations / mainframe operating systems support and hardware configurations. Then another 8 years a Unisys in IT. Sorry that none of us are listening to you. Where are you? is the service CL is providing their PRISM product? I could possibly see this being a coax connection in which case you may need a DOCSIS type modem which has ethernet out to your router. I don't think you ever really stated what physical type connection is provided from CL.

You are not the only one who has retired. So has the twerp who asked the question and refused to listen to the answers. They are now in the "Retired_Member" graveyard. So they won't see any more messages.

It is really puzzling when people try to explain to someone what is going on and they simply refuse to pay attention.

With luck this conversation will sit here for the benefit of anyone else who comes here and searches the archive for messages about Centurylink and, like the original questioner, refuses to ask the ISP about compatible hardware.

Anyone care to nominate a reply that deserves to be marked as Accept as Solution?

Why?  The first one seemed to me to cover the basic facts/mysteries.

The facts didn't change, and the mysteries were never resolved.

I (still) know nothing, but my Web search found:

      https://kmwoley.com/blog/bypassing-needless-centurylink-wireless-router-on-gigabit-fiber/

It rambles through a bunch of unnecessary intermediate steps, but
appears to suggest that there are two critical WAN settings for
CenturyLink fiber (non-DSL) service:

      PPPoE

      VLAN ID = 201
