You did not say that you had created separate SSIDs or who told you to use different SSIDs..
Some people like the same SSID option, some prefer separate SSIDs.
More advanced routers use Smart Connect, which forces people to use the same SSID and password for both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.

No. There is no such thing. (Have you seen one?)
"dual band" refers to the 2.4GHz and 5GHz radio bands, which are
employed in the wireless-network section of the router. The modem is
unrelated to those radios.

You just need a modem that supports whatever flavour of Internet you have.
The most common types are DSL and cable. DSL usually comes out of the wall at what looks like a standard telephone socket. If you don't know what you have, ask your Internet service provider.
You will see "modems" sold as "dual band" but that is because they combine a modem and a router.
If you already have a router, then you'd do best to avoid a modem/router. It can cause headaches. Just look for a modem only device.

Re: Dual Band modem
Thank you for your help. I have an Arris TM 3402A modem and the Netgear AC 1750. How do I choose/determine which band to use with devices? It looks like everthing is on the 2.4 band and nothing on the 5.0 band.

That may be because the wifi clients you are using cannot work at 5 GHz.
What are you trying to connect? Look at the specifications. Can it "see" 5 GHz?

There is no such thing. AC1750 is not a Netgear model number. It is a label that Netgear, and others, attach to hardware to describe wifi speeds.
Your footer says R6400. Is that what you own? Look at the label on the thing.

Re: Dual Band modem
Yes, it is the R6400. I do I know if a device sees 5.0? I apologize for the questions. I am 70 and trying to learn and I really appreciate you helping me.

Re: Dual Band modem
All devices (iPhones, iPads, Samsung 8, Mac) connect to 2.4, but I do not know how to have any of them connect to 5 ghz. Should the devices choose automatically or do I need to change a setting on the deive or router? Thanks again for your hellp.

Re: Dual Band modem
There is support for the R6400, including a manual, somewhere at the end of this link:

Are both the wifi LEDs on the top lit up?

Re: Dual Band modem
It is not clear to me how you know that these devices connect to the 2.4 GHz wifi rather than 5 GHz.
Devices will usually connect to the "best" wifi source. So they will go for the 5 GHz, but only if the signal is strong enough. 2.4 GHz is slower but has a longer range.
It is really down to the wifi clients to pick the wifi to connect to. Your router has no control over that, so long as it is broadcasting its presence on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.

Re: Dual Band modem
Thank you for your information. Very helpful on the device choosing the band. I was told I needed to set up a second SSID for the 5ghz. That does not appear to be correct based on your answer. I will make both bands the same SSID and see how it goes. I really appreciate your help.

Thank you so much for all your help. I changed back to one SSID and now I have the Apple devices showing as connected to 5ghz.

Re: Dual Band modem
Well done. That's good news.
I have never seen any problems using the same SSID and password. It is good to know that it works on the R6400.
Thanks for reporting back.
