Re: GOOGLE CHROME ERROR PAGE - DUE TO NULLS IN HEADER OF ROUTER SETTINGS PAGE

What steps were involved in upgrading to the Ancistrus firmware and how safe would you say the update process is?

Did you have to re enter all of your settings etc

The best people to answer questions like those are probably those who hand knitted this alternative firmware. There won't be that many experts on it here.

Just another user.

My network DM200 -> R7800 -> GS316 -> PL1000 -> Orbi RBR40 -> Orbi RBS50Y -> RBS40V

Its easy, just go to the releases of Ancistrus https://github.com/negan07/ancistrus/releases

Read down to the bottom of the latest build, currently #605

You will find a link in "Assets" just after commentary, for the zip ..

D7000-V1.0.1.74_1.0.1-ancistrus_negan07-build-605.zip

.. Download the zip, right click the download and extract it (using something like 7Zip or WinRAR - if you havent got one of them installed, I think Windows own archive UnZip will work on it).

Among the extracted files is a disc image file.

Load up your Web Browser, and enter 192.168.0.1 in the Address / URL bar and press return

Log in to your router

And then go to Advanced, Administration, Firmware Update.

Click the Browse button.
Navigate to the firmware file you just downloaded and extracted.
The file ends in .img.
Select the firmware file.

Click the Upload button.

This is all best done with an ethernet connection to the router, but I have done it with WIFI the last three times without issue.

It will take a few minutes to upload the firmware file into the router, the router will reboot.

You may have to log back in to the router once its rebooted. For me I just wait until my machine auto connects me to the router when it comes back up, and stay on the same router page and it all goes great.

Your settings will be preserved. And you will find you have another Tab, the Ancistrus Tab, which allows you to dabble with even more settings, though I personally leave them at default (Unless TelNetting is enabled, I recall turning that off because its not something I wish to use, or allow anyone else to be able to TelNet into the router)

You can find all the above Instructions in the official manual for the D7000 here ..

http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/D7000/D7000_UM_EN.pdf

You can find additional instructions for all the new capabilities Ancistrus gives you here on the Ancistrus WIKI ..

Re: GOOGLE CHROME ERROR PAGE - DUE TO NULLS IN HEADER OF ROUTER SETTINGS PAGE

Forgot to mention .. You can also click the title of some of the new commands, and they link you to the relevant part of the wiki explaining the command.

For example see this screenshot https://i.imgur.com/5iWcRFs.png

Instead of ticking the box, click the title of say "Inhibit Schedule", and your browser will open a new tab and take you to the explanation.

That set of inhibitions is also where you turn off (un-check) the TelNet Daemon

If there is a service you will never use there, you can now disable what you do not need to be running on your little linux box = One less vector for any potential attacks which NetGears own firmware does not allow you to dabble with ..

.. But be warned, ensure you know what you can turn off, some of these will effectively disable some functions you may want on in the Basic and Advanced Tabs.

And lastly - If you are worried about losing your settings, back them up first with the usual "Backup Settings" to a file on your HD - Screenshot https://i.imgur.com/k74L2FJ.png

Many thanks for the screen shot, that just what I have asked for.

How much if anything of the "original" screens have been modified?

Original menus (Basic and Advanced tabs) are the same as NetGear official firmware.
