   For an unmanaged switch?  No.  (Not unless it's defective.)

   What's your (unspecified) "the modem"?  If it's actually a modem (not
a router or modem+router), then connecting it to a network switch might
be a poor idea.

   Is there some actual problem which you are trying to solve?  If so,
then starting at the beginning (and providing some basic information)
might be helpful.

Actually, I meant to say the router.

Other switches I have used have a specified port to plug in the cable from the router into, and then the remaining ports go to the end users. The manual that came with the gs305 switch does not indicate which port to use for the router, or if it does not matter which port I plug it into.

   Antiques?  In the old days (in the days of hubs rather than
switches), a special (cross-wired) "uplink" port was common.  In many
cases, it was a convenience, removing the need to use a crossover cable
to get the receive wires connected to the transmit wires when connecting
similar devices.  Nowadays, practically every Ethernet port everywhere
adjusts automatically, so no one cares.
