Why? Many people prefer separate modems and routers.
Modem/routers get less attention when ii comes to firmware updates. They also lack some of the features that you can get with a router.
You don't say where you are, but a separate modem and router don't cost much more than separate items. (DSL modem prices in the USA are insanely high.) And if you ever change your Internet service, you can keep the router and replace the modem.
I had a D6400 in modem/only mode, feeding a choice of routers.
In modem-only mode the D6400 took so long to come on line that the router timed out and the network failed to connect. So I replaced it with a DM200. Simple, small and straightforward. All I had to do was to set it into modem only mode. (It comes with basic "routering".)

I would say only that AFAICT "upgrading" to at least a newer Netgear modem/router does not buy you reliability, i.e. "reseting from time to time" happens with all of them.

Re: Looking for and upgrade for a VDSL Modem Router (right now using the D6400)
Here in the USA what I had to do was I was able to put the ISP modem/router in "transparent bridge mode" including the VLAN #. Once in this mode you can connect the router of your choice using PPPoE and provide your ISP credentials from the router. The router WAN address will be the ISP assigned IP address. I think in the EU there are modem/router combos from ASUS that support AX (wifi 6).
