NETGEAR High-Speed Broadband DSL Modem (VDSL ADSL) - Compatible with BT, Sky, Virgin, Talk Talk, Vod

I'm looking to purchase one of the above but I have noticed that my BT modem has a network connection from the master box, a network connection to the router and a small phone connector inot the back on the unit. Do I need to use the phone connector on the modem?

Assuming that "the above" is a DM200, why?  What is the actual
problem which you are trying to solve?

That might depend on what it is.

Presumably, DSL service would involve some kind of telephone-like
connection, but your description of this stuff is so vague as to convey
practically no useful information.

THat's what I'm wondering,  the BT Modem has 1 RJ11 connection from the master phone box, 2 RJ45 connections one to the master phone box and one from there to my main router

The DM200 has two conections, are they both RJ45 or is one an RJ11 and will it make any difference not connecting one

Are any of these ports labeled?

Knowing nothing about your "the master phone box", I could only guess
at the purpose of the "RJ45 connection" (Ethernet?) between it and your
"the BT Modem".

   Here's a radical concept:

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RTFM

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in the model number, and look
for Documentation.  Get the User Manual.  Read.  The picture may be a
little misleading ("VDSL" port too big), but the text is pretty clear:

LAN port. One Fast Ethernet RJ-45 LAN ports to connect the modem
to a LAN device such as acomputer, router, WiFi router, or
Ethernet switch. This port is colored yellow.

VDSL port. One RJ-11 DSL port for connecting the modem to an ADSL
or VDSL line. This port is colored gray.

Presumably, a DM200 could handle your data connection, but if the
(unspecified) "the BT Modem" has a special RJ45 port for voice service,
which is expected by your (unspecified) "the master phone box", then the
DM200 might not do everything you want.

If you have BT's DSL, then you can bin the BT modem.

You just plug the DM200 into the phone socket instead of the BT modem/router.

If you don't have DSL, then the DM200 is no use.

But do that and you will need a router if you need wifi or anything but the simplest of networks. If you do buy a separate router, the DM200 has some basic router features so you should put it into modem only mode before you attach the router.

Most BT modem/routers do not have a simple "modem only mode". I have never investigated using one as a router without the modem. The only documentation I have for mine suggests that it lacks the WAN port that you will find on some other modem/routers.

Out of interest, why do you want to get rid of the BT box? They aren't very good – I have one sitting in its original shrink wrap – and lack the controllability of many routers. But I wouldn't change it just for the hell of it.

Re: NETGEAR High-Speed Broadband DSL Modem (VDSL ADSL) - Compatible with BT, Sky, Virgin, Talk Talk,

I've tried setting the modem in 'modem only' mode but the network refuses to recognise this.

As I'm replacing a BT modem, do I get it up as BT service or Plusnet (who is my ISP)?

Not a useful problem description.  It does not say what you did.  It
does not say what happened when you did it.  As usual, showing actual
actions (commands) with their actual results (error messages, LED
indicators, ...) can be more helpful than vague descriptions or
interpretations.

   "Plusnet"?  Whence came that?

   Still a complete mystery.

Modem+router? Yes then making it modem only

Advanced settings

When I connect the LAN cable to the modem, the router shows no internet connection while the modem has all LEDs green

That's my ISP

I'm trying to connect DM200 to act as a router only onto a working network to replace a BT modem

   Still a complete mystery.

If all the LEDs on the DM200 are green it is connected to the Internet.

What is on the other end of this LAN connection?

What is this "working network"?

While the DM200 does have limited router features, it won't support much in the way of a network. It has no wifi and no spare LAN ports for network connections.

If you have a router, then you need to set that up too. Check the Quick Start guide.

There is support for the DM200, including the Quick Start guide and manual, somewhere at the end of this link:

Like most of this thread, that makes no sense to me.  What happened
to "I'm looking to purchase one of the above"?  Do you now _have_ a
DM200?

A DM200 is useful as a DSL modem, and it includes a primitive router.
Because its built-in router is so limited, it makes little sense to try
to use a "DM200 to act as a router only".  Or did you mean "modem only"?

You keep talking about "a BT modem", which apparently is a
modem+router.  It's veryhard to tell if you know what you're talking
about.

> That's my ISP

So, Plusnet is your ISP.  They offer some kind of DSL service?  Is
your (still very poorly described) "BT 's UK FTTC (VDSL2/Infinity) May
be Huaweii" currently in use as your DSL modem?  And it works?

And you now want to use your new DM200 as a modem-only (_not_ "a
router only") with your "my router Asus AC66"?  Or what?

Is there some kind of voice telephone service tangled up in this
mess?

We're now ten messages into this discussion, and no one seems to know
what equipment you have, or what you want to do with it.  Some of us may
lose interest very soon.

Modem only that should be

I have one now

Yes I meant modem only

Yes it's a BT modem that goes to a Linksys 8300 router

I just want to lose the BT Modem and if possible use the DM200 as the modem

From what you have said before, you are nearly there.

If the LEDs on the DM200 are all green, then you havs successfully connected it to the Plusnet Internet.

Now comes the complicated bit.

@BigBobG57 wrote:

If that is one of those Homehub boxes, then you cannot put it into modem only mode. So to get it to work painlessly with the Linksys EA8300 – I assume that this is the full model number – you may have had it working as a wireless access point. Or it may  have configured itself on setup to avoid conflicts with the Homehub.

To get the the Linksys to play nicely with the DM200 it makes sense to do two things:

  • put the DM200 into modem only mode
  • reset the Linksys 8300 so that it is working as a router

You said earlier that you "tried setting the modem in 'modem only' mode but the network refuses to recognise this".

Then you said "When I connect the LAN cable to the modem, the router shows no internet connection while the modem has all LEDs green".

We don't know what you were doing when that happened. One possible interpretation is that you didn't start the network in the correct order. Do that and things will not connect properly

Be sure to restart your network in this sequence:

  • Turn off and unplug modem.
  • Turn off router and computers.
  • Plug in and turn on modem. Wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
  • Turn on the router and wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
  • Turn on computers and rest of network.

Before you do that, reset the Linksys 8300 so that it forgets any settings that it picked up when connected to the Homehub.

You can then follow the setup instructions for your router.
