Need modem help

Not sure what to do so I am here looking for help.

My current internet system is an older Verizon modem/router setup. Maybe 10years old or more, not sure. I have only DSL (telephone cable) for internet access. My son gave this router to me for Xmas hopping to increase our very sloooooow internet speed. I believe I need a new modem to work with this router but have no idea what to purchase. I could return this router but my son purchased it in Ky and I live in PA. What should I do? THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP.

Does it have a maker and model number?

Where "this router" is this router?:

Not likely to help much.  Your Internet speed is most likely limited
by your ISP (and its infrastructure), not by your (unspecified)
modem+router.  Also, "very sloooooow" is not a very detailed
description.

Connecting a three-inch-diameter water pipe to feed your kitchen sink
won't greatly increase the maximum flow rate through your water meter.

The fastest DSL modem in the world won't help you if your ISP service
is incompatible with it.  An R6700 might have better wireless-network
capability than your old gizmo, but that may help little if the
bottleneck is the modem-ISP link.

Ask your ISP what levels of service they can provide, what they cost,
and what sort of modem(s) they support/tolerate at each level.   Then
you should be able to determine what your "an older Verizon
modem/router" can do as a modem.  (For example, if some particular
service level uses VDSL, but your old modem is limited to ADSL, then
you'd need to replace your modem to get that level of service.)
