Re: Nighthawk D7000 Bufferbloat
The last beta firmware that Netgear had me try FINALLY worked! Bufferbloat rating is now an "A". This was 2 or 3 months ago, so hopefully they incorporated the fixes into the most recent firmware upgrade.

Re: Nighthawk D7000 Bufferbloat
@lolollo, perhaps using the FW that was provided to @ruzicka (maybe the beta 36_42n) would resolve either the lan ip reservations either the bufferbloat issue (if you tune the QoS you manage to get a A in the famous tests).
The fact is that I can't give you that firmware but you may try asking netgear.
That's a great FW, of course being a BETA has some little visualization issue, but includes for sure new DSL drivers, along with fixed lan reservations and improved QoS strategy.
I would try with that rather than putting extra pressure over NETGEAR that perhaps is working on a more "structured" FW release...

Re: Nighthawk D7000 Bufferbloat
The test FW I used was a while back. I have no doubt that, by now, any of that has already been incorporated in the latest public FW. I myself even went ahead and updated to the lastest FW.

Re: Nighthawk D7000 Bufferbloat
which version was it?
I believe the .36 BETA is not older than the latest .38 official.
I believe netgear is taking some numbers to compile the beta but not always the number of fw edition is representing the real age of the FW itself.
Nevertheless it appears like the .36 BETA fixes all and only shows little visualization issues.
ciao!

Re: Nighthawk D7000 Bufferbloat
On the other hands who has tests before buying d7000?
In very few cases bufferbloat is graded A also with other Broadcom based modems.

if netgear just gives us 3rd party firmware like they did with D7800 life would be easier

the trial firmware 36n_42 does work... but it screws up the wireless for me... so yea, someday hopefully they make a release that actually works.

Re: Nighthawk D7000 Bufferbloat
Hi to all
I had used the beta 36_42n and this was the best solution for the bufferbload. I had always A in the test and the big upload on the cloud wasn't a problem. Now I'm trying the last version 42 ..... beautifull to use the vpn with my iPhone, but the bufferbload is crazy. During an upload is impossible to use the ADSL to navigate because it is very very slow. For to do the login and to write this message ...... it is horrible. Is this the professionalism of the netgear?

Rif.: Nighthawk D7000 Bufferbloat
Hello there,
i bought this impressive modem-router with Black Friday discounts, at first i was impressed by wi-fi performance and lower ping then my previous modem / router but then i noticed that my setup was affected from increased latency w/e i watch a video or upload small files.
I searched a bit on google and i find out that the increased latency is related to the high bufferbloat and im still looking for a solution :(, i tried to fix the problem with qos but it didn't work 😞
I can't play online games with lag spikes now..

Re: Nighthawk D7000 Bufferbloat
If you can:
1) return the product and choose the asus ac68u
2) if you cannot return it, open a ticket with the support and ask the beta version (I remember something of 36_qos). This version is the solution for the wish probkem.
I'm sorry but you have bought a good product but with a terrible firmware.

Rif.: Nighthawk D7000 Bufferbloat
I recently uploaded the lastest firmware...unfortunately my bufferbloat problem came back. (Grade F)
However, I when I reimplemented some of the settings that tech support had advised me to do months ago, I was able to make it a bit better (Grade C).
Please follow steps below (given from teck support):
1) Access D700 UI.
2) Go to Advanced TAB > Setup > QoS Setup.
3) Checked "Turn Internet Access QoS On".
4) Manually enter the upload bandwidth (your advertised max upload speed).
5) Apply settings.
6) Test connection.

Rif.: Nighthawk D7000 Bufferbloat
I tried but still the bufferbloat problem is still there.
My max upload is 330 KB/s and reduce it to 100 didn't change anything.
Dlsreports still reports F on bufferbloat and my ping goes up to 2-3k ping when i upload an image.

Rif.: Nighthawk D7000 Bufferbloat
When my upload was 700Kb/s I had horrendous bufferbloat trouble and no firmwares fixed it. Every time my phone synced my other devices would be unusable. Now my upload is 20Mb/s and bufferbloat isn't a problem (although it still gets a D at DSLreports). So I think the D7000 firmware is just terrible at lower speeds. Maybe they aren't testing it properly at those speeds?

Re: Nighthawk D7000 Bufferbloat
I don't see returning D7000 and buying the Asus DSL-AC68U as the cure to all the problems. Specially on the modem side the BCM Chip of the D7000 is one of the most advanced on the market, way more stable and performing than the ASUS one that maybe has its best point in the SW...
The bufferbloat issue is generally fixed or improved by the combination of:
- the BETA FW against Bufferbloat + QoS on + 90% of uplink speed set as upload bandwidth limit in the QoS page.
Furthermore I wouldn't trust the dslreports.com website since I have a great VDSL 100/20 with 91 and 21 speeds and with some browser it fails the test measuring weird high speeds in upload and then dropping to the real one... I would rather run a iCloud backup or Dropbox upload and manually a
ping netgear.com -t
then do not interrupt the ping, no more upload and check if you observe a big change.
This should allow you to "quantify" your bufferbloat.
Do also consider that not only the D7000 has this issue, unfortunately the very first FW of D7000 bring this issue to a level of attention that apparently now comes unresolvable... for me, after FW .26 the Bufferbloat was well fixed.

Re: Nighthawk D7000 Bufferbloat
Any idea how to get a hold of the beta firmware?
And by "90% of uplink speed set as upload bandwidth limit", are you saying to use 90% of the advertised max speed? I currently have 40mbps download and 5mbps upload, so I should set it to 0.9 x 5.0 = 4.5mbps?

Re: Nighthawk D7000 Bufferbloat
Yes, this isn't the cure. It is my opinion.
I have an ADSL+ not Vdsl. With the various firmware I found only problems. Do you know one version of firmware for this router without one bug ? No because doesn't exist, the last two version have the same problem with the vpn, and the problem of the ip reservation ? More then 3 months to solved it. The hardware is good but the firmware is indecent. I had try with asus and for me .... another world. Hardware old .....yes but the firmware is much better. The price ... about 200€ for the d7000 and about 135€ for asus. If I pay I want a good product (hardware and software)
I repeat: this is my opinion.
Ps: the bufferbload is F with the D7000 and A with asus.

Re: Nighthawk D7000 Bufferbloat
due to NETGEAR policies is forbidden to spread their BETA FW over forums, therefore I can't do it. On the other hands if I were you I would contact NETGEAR by explaining them the problem and ask for the FW specifically.
What has worked, and what actually brings my VDSL bufferbloat to A or B, is setting the 90% of the uplink speed in the bandwidth limiter: so as you did calculate, 5*0.9=4.5
Generally in VDSL (as I believe yours is) you hit almost the maximum uplink profile, so the calculation should work for you as well.
Don't stick too much on dslreports.com and other people's impression, just target yourself in reaching a smooth navigation, you'll see that D7000 can gift you way better performances than other modem routers, at least, this was for me. In my case D7000 even beated D7800 on gain of downlink.
Let us know.

Re: Nighthawk D7000 Bufferbloat
I did contact tech support, via chat. I explained that I had worked with tech support several months ago to resolve my bufferbloat problem, and that a beta firmware had done the trick for me. But after having upgraded to the latest public firmware (which tech support had told me would have the bufferbloat fixes incorporated), the problem came back. (I had not thought to save the old beta firmware)
I asked to simply have access to the old beta firmware, or whatever current beta firmware that also had the bufferbloat fixes incorporated.
They told me that they could not do that, as I was now well out of the 90-day free support period. They advised me to contact the "premium" support number (which costs a minimum of $50) and explain the situation to them. I can't say that I like the idea of paying for a solution that they had already given me months ago.

Re: Nighthawk D7000 Bufferbloat
I have ADSL (6.50~ Mbps 330 kbps~) and cutting upload speed doesn't help meaning that's not a true solution. It "might work" for vdsl or fiber but in not in my case.
The only solution i found is the implementation of SQM (Smart Queue Management) which seems to be working extremely good.
Now im asking, is Netgear aware of SQM?

Re: Nighthawk D7000 Bufferbloat
I was able to get my bufferbloat from F to A: Turn on QoS - the recommended speedtest settings weren't enough, so I cut my speed to 55/3.5 (I have a 60/4 connection) on my R8000 and R7000 routers. VoIP type calls were a little grainy before, will be interesting to see if that did the trick. On WNDR3700, I flashed DDWRT that made a huge difference and gave me a whole slew of options.

Okay...thank you for the information.
Unfortunately it appears that that is not usable with a D7000.
