Nighthawk D7000 Not detecting DSL after 1.0.0.16. Missing Features.

Hi,

I've had my D7000 for over a year now. Its been operating fine. I'm aware that there are problems with this device with Firmware past 1.0.0.16. Mine is stuck at this version also as it won't detect my DSL at all if I upgrade the firmware.

I've been fine with this for a time till now. I have installed a Security Camera system that requires me to port-forward in order to view the cameras outside of my network. At my current firmware I am unable to use the port-forwarding tab in the menus. I can get to the page but when I click on anything nothing happens. This has also been a known issue for me in the past

I've tried firmware 1.42 as some users mentioned it resolving issues and I tried 1.70 last night. Neither detect DSL even after a factory reset.

I'm just checking in to see if anyone has found a solution to this modem not detecting DSL with all these firmware updates sinces its pretty much the only reason to buy one of these.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

   So, that's a D7000[v1], not a D7000v2?

Of which "problems" are you aware?  That's much older than the oldest
version I've ever tried (V1.0.1.48_1.0.1).

> [...] it won't detect my DSL at all if I upgrade the firmware.

What, exactly, does "not detect my DSL" mean to you?  As usual,
showing actual actions with their actual results (error messages, LED
indicators, ...) can be more helpful than vague descriptions or
interpretations.

What is your ISP?  DSL parameters?

In this case, are you getting a good DSL link, but some PPPoX
authentication fails, or does the DSL link itself fail, or what?  LEDs?

ADVANCED > ADVANCED Home : Internet Port : Show Statistics?

There have been reports of problems with special characters in PPP
credentials (in this and other Netgear models).  I don't recall seeing
any reports of low-level DSL connection problems.

Re: Nighthawk D7000 Not detecting DSL after 1.0.0.16. Missing Features.

Hi, thanks for your reply!

I have the V1 as far as I can tell as it isnt stated otherwise on the bottom of the modem or in the configuration page.

I'm having the same problem as the following links. "No Ethernet Cable Is Plugged into the Router Internet Port" when upgrading firmware.

It says the same thing either going through the wizard or manual setup.

I have At&t DSL

Most answers always refer to V1.0.0.16-18 solving the issues.

Here are my internet setings. I can put them in after an upgrade just like this with no positive result.

I will have to upgrade it again, then show statistics of a failed connection, then revert back to .16 in order to show you that.

   Plain-old AT&T DSL, not U-verse?

And they're also very old, except the one about a different model,
D7800.

can't see yours yet.  (An attached file incurs no such delay.)  Some
little description would be nice, even if the picture were visible.

   Still wondering.

Are you using PPPoA or PPPoE?  Any special characters in your PPP
credentials?

This whole Q&A thing works best if the Q's get A'd.

Re: Nighthawk D7000 Not detecting DSL after 1.0.0.16. Missing Features.

I ask that you please bear with me. I work very far away from home and have very little time at home before I go back into work. I appreciate that you are taking time out of your day to assist me but remarks like "This whole Q&A thing works best if the Q's get A'd." are unwelcome. I'm trying to get you what you need but have precious few minutes to mess with this.

Plain-old AT&T DSL, not U-verse?

Correct, not U-verse. Standard 5 meg connection.

And they're also very old, except the one about a different model,
D7800.

Correct, I believe the answers are still relevant if I'm using the same model that is still having the same issues and con't operate at full usage if not on v1.0.0.16 fw. The 7800 model still seemed relevant since it had the same solution.

In this case, are you getting a good DSL link, but some PPPoX
authentication fails, or does the DSL link itself fail, or what? LEDs?
ADVANCED > ADVANCED Home : Internet Port : Show Statistics?

I'll try to get this for you when I get home tonight. The wizard never starts or gives an error as it won't get passed "not detecting cable" on the first step. Manual entry doesn't show an error unless its on the Internet statistics page that I did not veiw yet. Did not veiw Leds yet.

Are you able to see it now?

There have been reports of problems with special characters in PPP
credentials (in this and other Netgear models).

This is interesting. May have some merit but shouldn't it be secondary to "No Ethernet Cable Is Plugged into the Router Internet Port"?

Are you using PPPoA or PPPoE? Any special characters in your PPP
credentials?

PPPoE. I have my password written down at home taped to the modem. I don't think it has special characters but I can check that tonight.

Thanks for your assistance.

If you answer a small fraction of the pending questions, and don't
explain why at that time, then I'm likely to infer that you're
uncooperative and/or stupid.

> [...] I'm trying to get you what you need [...]

With my weak psychic powers, all I know is what you write.

> Are you able to see it now?

Yes.  Assuming that all the VPI/VCI/VLANID stuff is right, it all
looks plausible.  (My CenturyLink connection uses different VPI/VCI
values, but that's not amazing.)  A quick Web search found a document
which suggests that the VPI depends on your location:

      https://www.att.com/support_media/images/pdf/hsi/ATT_HSI_Self-Installation_Guide_All.pdf

Presumably, whatever works with the old firmware should also work
with the newer firmware.

> [...] This is interesting. May have some merit but shouldn't it be

> Port"?

With a good DSL connection, I'd expect the modem+router not to care
about any WAN/Internet Ethernet connection.  With a bad DSL connection,
and no WAN/Internet Ethernet connection, that would be a reasonable
complaint.  But, if you're expecting a good DSL connection, then the
problem is with the bad DSL connection, not the lack of a WAN/Internet
Ethernet connection, which you weren't intending to use in the first
place.

> [...] I don't think it has special characters [...]

It's only one of the possibilities.

> [...] Did not veiw Leds yet. [...]

   They'd be interesting.

We are talking about Netgear firmware, so almost any conceivable
defect is possible, but I'd've expected a couple of years to be long
enough to solve a problem of this type with a major ISP.
