R7000 & DM200 Setup

Hi, I have set up the DM200 into bridge mode and I have the R7000 Nighthawk as a router. I am using Plusnet as my ISP. All of the devices attached to the router can all see the internet fine.  The problem is that I can not access the DM200 modem admin page on 192.168.5.1. The settings that I have in the R7000 are :-

   WAN Setup

   Connection Type      PPPoE

  Network Setup

   Local IP Address       192.168.1.1

   Subnet Mask              255.255.255.0

   Gateway                      192.168.5.1

   Local DNS                  0.0.0.0

All of the other settings are the default.

Could someone please let me know what the correct settings are to be able to access the DM200 Modem admin page.

Please ask if you need any further information.

                         Thanks.

Re: R7000 & DM200 Setup

Hi, I have got rid of the gateway ip address and the internet connection still works O.K.

By the way, Netgear calls the gateway ip address "Gateway IP Address" as stated on page 24 of the Nighthawk R7000 User Manual in the chapter called "Specify Your Internet Settings".

So now we have that sorted, I am still left with the problem of not being able to access the modem admin page on 192.168.5.1 from my computer on the same subnet as the router (192.168.1.1). Any ideas anyone ?

Re: R7000 & DM200 Setup

Hi,

I fear the trick Netgear does on the DM200 (and some other devices) to permit an in-band management access (kind of a L3 wire tapping for 192.168.5.1) does not work with an encapsulated (PPPoE) WAN connection.

Would have to set-up a dedicated test environment to confirm, have a test DSL here, including a DM200, but a little bit short on time (and motivation ... @ChristineT).

Why invent your own names for these items?  What does Netgear call
these things?

Why?  If you "set up the DM200 into bridge mode", then why would the
R7000 WAN/Internet parameters not be obtained from your ISP?  And, if we
assume that this "Gateway" is really the WAN/Internet address of the
R7000, then why is it not your public IP address?

> Local DNS                  0.0.0.0

What does "Local DNS" mean to you, and why is it not set to some
reasonable value?

You seem to be working too hard.  I'd let the R7000 deal with your
ISP using DHCP, and stop trying to outsmart the automatic configuration.

Re: R7000 & DM200 Setup

O.K. Thanks for your reply antinode.

I am not very good with network stuff.

You say that the Gateway ip address should not be 192.168.5.1. Is the modem not the gateway between the router and the internet ?

If the modem is not the gateway between the router and the internet then what should the gateway address be ?

I will get on to your other questions after we have sorted this first one out.

First, I'm saying that I don't know what this "Gateway" setting is.

> [...] Is the modem not the gateway between the router and the internet ?

Physically it is, but that "192.168.5.1" addrsss is a special thing,
independent of the connection between your router and your ISP.  If you
get that ISP connection working, then the "192.168.5.1" thing should
take care of itself.  There's no reason for "192.168.5.1" to appear
anywhere in the R7000 configuration.

>    If the modem is not the gateway between the router and the internet

_Whose_ "the gateway address"?  The gateway address on a computer on
your LAN should be the LAN IP address of your router.  (That should also
be handled automatically.)  If you're talking about a "the gateway
address" on the R7000, then I still don't know what you mean.

   Still a mystery.

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in each of your model numbers,
and look for Documentation.  Get the User Manuals.  Read.

Another good reason to read and follow the instructions, and not try
to get too creative.

No, you would access it from the (W)LAN through the NAT router to the Internet connection. As the 192.168.5.1/24 is a different subnet, so all traffic is sent to the Internet connection. But again, I suspect the DM200 is able to capture plain Ethernet TCP/IP IPv4 only, not the one in a PPPoE tunnel.

Re: R7000 & DM200 Setup

Thanks schumaku, I have accessed the modem gui page by connecting directly from the computer to the modem (without going through the router) via a pair of powerline adapters. I set my computers ip address to 192.168.5.2 with a netmask of 255.255.255.0 with no dhcp in rc.inet1.conf and it connects fine.
