R7000 won't connect to DM200 in modem/bridge mode

Hi folks,

Getting very frustrated with this, having spent hours try to get it working:

I have an R7000 which I want to connect to fibre broadband using a DM200 in modem/bridge mode. I can get the DM200 to working when in router mode. However, when I flip it to modem mode, I simply cannot get the R7000 to to connect through the DM200. Both firmwares are up-to-date, and both have been factory reset multiple times.

I have confirmed with my ISP (Plusnet) that everything is working their end, and that there are no MAC address restrictions on the connection.

I know it should work, as I successfully set up my brothers R9000 with a DM200 about 18-months ago, though I do remember it being a total pain to get working, and seemed to suddenly connect by pure chance.

Does anybody have any suggestions on how to get this configuration working?

Thanks in advance!

Kevin

How, exactly?  Which of the DM200 settings (PPPoE, ...?) do you need
to arrange on the R7000 when it's the router?

As always, actual version numbers would be more useful than your
opinion of what's "up-to-date" today.

It's a good thing that you kept detailed notes.

Re: R7000 won't connect to DM200 in modem/bridge mode

DM200 firmware version: 1.0.0.61

R7000 firmware version: 1.0.9.64

There's limited configuration options in the "internet settings" page of the R7000. I have set PPPoE and entered my correct username and password. I've left IP and DNS  "get from ISP", assuming the modem will pass these through.

You'd think the manual would have the details ...

thanks,

Kevin

Various problems have been reported here for the ".60" and ".64"
versions.  If you get desperate, then you might try an older version.

It's more "not care about" than "pass through".  Are there any
special characters in your PPP credentials?  Various firmware versions
on various models have had trouble with some special characters.

It's nice that you're happy about the settings, but unless you
exhibit them, the non-psychics here won't be able to spot any problems
which might not have been obvious to you.

What do all the LED indicators on these devices indicate?  What does
the management web site of each device say about its state?

Re: R7000 won't connect to DM200 in modem/bridge mode

on the DM200 have you ticked VLAN pass through or not when changing modes? if you have then you need to use vlan 101 for plus net. if your router has no vlan options then try and untick vlan pass through on the dm200.

this works for me but I still have other serious issues in bridge mode with this DM200 and I am also on plusnet so I would be interested if you get it up and running and have a firestick + netflix working.

Can you get it to work on its own in modem only mode?

That's how I set mine up. Confirmed that it worked by using a wired LAN connection to the DM200, then introduced it to my R7800 in the usual way.

I'm on BT, which also owns Plusnet, so the settings should not be wildly different.

Then again, "fibre broadband" could mean various things. I assume you have DSL, fibre to the cabinet, rather than fibre to the home.

Re: R7000 won't connect to DM200 in modem/bridge mode

I have Plusnet fttc. In modem only mode I cannot get things like Netflix on the firestick to work unless I change the MTU to 1400 in my router. If your in modem only mode and have clan pass through ticked then you need to set pppoe and the vlan up in your router. If you untick vlan passthrough on the dm200 then you only need to setup the pppoe settings in your router for your isp. But all my testing with the thing in modem only mode has proved it to be unstable so I have given up and back it goes to be replaced by a vigor 130

Here on my BT network it is 1492.

Not something that I have ever changed.

If I plug any other modem bridge the. 1492 is the MTU only this DM200 demands 1400 from
Me. Makes no sense.

You can say that again.

But we have to throw in the BT factor.

Re: R7000 won't connect to DM200 in modem/bridge mode

So, having faffed around with multiple resets and trying every possible combination, I gave up. It simply wouldn't connect using the R7000, even thought the DM200 would connect in router and modem only mode.

Typically, I booted everything up the next day to have another go, and it connected immediately. I have no explanation as to why!

Flipping the DM200 back to router to check the settings shows (and to confirm service is FTTC):

country: uk

provider: plusnet

transfer mode: vdsl(ptm)

dsl mode: vdsl2

multiplexing: llc

vpi: 8

vci: 35

vlanid: 101

priority: blank

login required?: yes

isp: PPPoE

login: plusnet username

password: account password

service name: blank

ip: dynamic

dns: dynamic

mac: default

vlan passthrough: disabled

The R7000 has very little configurable options, but has the same username and password entered along with PPPoE enabled.

On the Netflix front (which is through an LG TV), I have got this working by lowering the MTU to 1400.

Did you reset the R7000 before introducing it to the DM200?

I have found that you may need to reset everything before you recreate the network. In this way you get the router to forget any settings it may have creates when connected to a different modem.

And, of course, you have to boot everything in the right order.

  • Turn off and unplug the modem.
  • Turn off the modem router and computers.
  • Plug in the modem and turn it on. Wait 2 minutes.
  • Turn on the modem router and wait 2 minutes.
  • Turn on the computers.
