Websites To be blocked

Dear Experts,

Am using Netgear DGN 1000 ADSL router, I have blocked some porn websites through my router, now I got 2 problems.

1. If type the webaddress directly the net gear router blocks the website, but if I search through google I can access the blocked website.

2. Some porn sites are not been blocked even I have added keyword in the site blocking area.

Please Help!!!!!

Thanks

Jude

Re: Websites To be blocked

The keyword blocking feature only works with http. It doesn't work with https. I don't know why Netgear continues to offer keyword blocking. It's anachronistic in this day and age.

Re: Websites To be blocked

Netgear's "solution" is to use parental controls.  I believe this is not available on the DGN1000.

One alternative is that you can use the family controls directly offered by OpenDNS or other, similar companies.  Basically, you use their DNS servers and they filter DNS queries coming from your network.

DNS filtering only provides domain level filtering, not URL filtering.  For example, you can block anything to foo.com but you can't block https://foo.com/badstuff/index.htm.  The weak spot in the solution is that you can't selectly block results from google.com without blocking all of google.com.  For that, you may have to turn on Google's own safe search option.

Another alternative is to filter directly from each device.  Obviously, this is rather cumbersome and labor intensive.  With the right software, you can filter to any level of granularity, so it can be much more effective than DNS filtering.
