What is the most recommended firmware for D7800 X4S?

Model: Nighthawk X4S AC2600 WiFi VDSL/ADSL Modem Router

Current Firmware: V1.0.1.56

Date of Purchase: 14/03/2020

Issue: WiFi keeps disappearing from all devices and sometimes could not connect to the device. Happened from the day of purchase.

Things done so far: Have done many factory resets and the issue keeps coming back. A temporary fix is to turn the device off and on in which the WiFi would appear. However, it will disappear again hours later. Have read through articles regarding the problem and arrived on the conclusion that it is the firmware's fault.

Question: What is the best firmware for my model to downgrade to?

I would investigate the cause of the wifi issues before worrying about firmware.

You say nothing about the wifi issue, so it is anyone's guess as to what might be going wrong.

Or just try whichever firmware you like and see how it works out.

Re: What is the most recommended firmware for D7800 X4S?

I'm having this exact same issue with the same modem! Have you managed to fix this?

I have the D7800 and had it on the latest firmware, though the issue was still there. I've downgraded the FW to V1.0.1.22 but no dice.

So angry that I paid $450 for this and the wifi drops out constantly on the 2.4Ghz radio. Looking online lots of people have this issue and Netgear hasn't done anything about it. Really sad.

I seems to only be the 2.4Ghz that does it so I've started moving all devices to the 5Ghz to see if there are still issue/s. Obviously not a fix, but a workaround for now.

This is what happens: 2.4ghz Wi-Fi channel disappears sometimes. If you see it and try to connect to it it asks for password. You put in passwork, and it says its incorrect. Reboot the router and all is fine for a short period, then it starts happening again.

In the logs, the only thing that stands out is: WLAN Access Rejected: Incorrect security

Please, has anyone had this issue and fixed it? If so, how??

Thanks

Hiya,

Did you ever get a resolution to your issue?  Sounds a lot like my issue.

Mine presents as working fine on an FTTN connection, but about once a day since purchase it will fully freeze up.  Lights are all on on the device, but every device drops off the WiFi (and the Wifi is no longer able to be detected), Ethernet connected devices lose their connection (literally says "media disconnected" in the IPconfig), and it requires a power cycle to get it running agian.

Seems unfortunate that there's a lot of posts about this happening but no-one has found a resolution...  Really don't want to return a brand new "performance" modem/router...

Impossible to tell without knowing a bit more than "about once a day since purchase it will fully freeze up".

ISP's throw these initials around with abandon. What does that mean where you are?

It might help to know which ISP this is and where you are.

My guess is one of those NBN installations. But that is just a guess. Who knows?

Hi,

I put a lot of that detail in a post of my own that I made on the modem/router forum page.  The post I made in this topic was to ask the original poster if he'd had an outcome.  The below is a copy/paste of my own post.  It covers in more detail my ISP and the nature of my freeze.  Note that whilst I did once upon a time have a career in IT, I am not a network specialist.

Hope the below is satisfactory.

Hi guys,

I recently purchased a Nighthawk D7800 modem/router, as my ISP provided ZTE would occasionally (weekly) have dropouts and need a reboot.

Unfortunately this purchase appears to have been a step backwards, as my new modem/router is locking up daily.  I'm on my third day since purchase, and I've just had to power cycle it for the third time.

Setup: It's pretty much "out of the box", i allowed it to auto-config with Exetel (Australian ISP, and connected using FTTN), punched in my user ID and password, and away it went.  I've got 2.4ghz WiFi and 5.0ghz WiFi enabled with multiple devices connecting to each (phones, TVs, etc.), and only a solar panel monitoring device connected via ethernet (I had my PC connected via ethernet for a while as well, but it was a really spotty connection.  I think it was trying to run gigabit down a cat5 cable, so i'm running the PC on wifi until i can get a Cat 6 cable). No USB devices connected, no guest WiFi, none of the remote connectivity functions turned on.

Symptoms: All the lights on the device stay on in the same state they were on in when it was functioning, but the WiFi network ceases functioning and stops being detectable.  If my PC was connected via Ethernet, it's showing "media disconnected" in the IPConfig.  Power cycling the router restores it to functionality (once it's booted up).  I'm at three reboots in three days.  Helpfully ,the router's log wipes itself when it reboots (not sure who's bright idea that was), and i can't really connect to it after it's crashed, so I can't access any diagnostics.

Question: I know I haven't tried a factory reset, but given I have just set this thing up from new out of the box, I'm wondering if there's maybe a firmware downgrade I need to do, or if there's a known setting that causes lockups?

If I'm unable to resolve the daily lockup thing or a Cat 6 cable doesn't fix my LAN connections, I'm going to have to return this device and ask for another brand from the retailer - I'm working from home and the express purpose of this device was for a good, high-performing, stable network...

But not, sadly, a link to that post.

Try this:

Nighthawk X42 (D7800) freezing / locking up daily ... - NETGEAR Communities

I do not understand the point of your post, other than to prove you can create a link to my own post (which I FULLY added to my reply), and to attempt to be condescending. I understand you are a major contributor to this site and are obviously frustrated with poorly detailed queries from every random person on a new account. As far as I can tell you're under no obligation to reply.

People come to these forums for help, not to be treated like idiots.

I was polite after your first condescending reply (noting my first post on this users thread was directed at the original poster and asked a specific user a specific question), as you also asked follow up questions and I was hopeful of assistance.

Thank you for being patronising whilst also contributing exactly nothing to this situation, but that's not exactly what I was after today. I will attempt to find answers elsewhere.

Enjoy continuing to criticise the quality of the queries people submit when asking for help in the future.

Hey CM,

It might sound weird but my modem router has stopped disconnecting my wifi out of nowhere. I don't know what I did. I did not downgrade to any firmware. The only change I have done is downloading the NETGEARgenie App (did this before the wifi problem stopped). Sorry that I can't be of much use to you. Honestly, this still does not appease the disappointment I have with NETGEAR. Support is limited and next to non-existent after the 30 days period. Ditch NETGEAR, go for ASUS if you can- least they have better support.

Telstra fttn here as well, exactly the same issue with the wifi dropping out and requiring a hard reboot to fix.  I have seen the same type of problem on multiple threads.  Only solution appears to be to never buy another Netgear product and chalk it up as character development.

They know about the issue, but don't care, we are unlikely to see any fixes, will take Asus 3 year warranty from now on.
