access router

I have an oder D7000 router which I want to use with my new Vodafone Router to create a wired hub for a shed in my garden.  I have tried to access the router to change the settings but I can't get to it.  I have tried routerlogin.net and 198.162.1.1 which just opens up the settings for my current router.  Can anyone help me access the router - does it have to be connected to the internet?  I have just got it connected to the computer via an ethernet cable at the moment.   I am not very tech savvy so please fogive me if there is an easy fix!

D7000[v1] or D7000v2?  Look for "Model" on the product label.
Firmware version?  Connected to what?

Does your (unspecified) "my new Vodafone Router" have a maker and
model number?

What, exactly, does "a wired hub" mean to you?  I suspect that you
mean a wireless access point (WAP), but when you invent your own novel
technical terms, it's hard to know what you mean.  What, exactly, do you
want the D7000[vX] in the shed to do for you?  I'm guessing that "wired"
means that you have an Ethernet cable running between your (unspecified)
"my new Vodafone Router" and the shed.  Which would be helpful.

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your (actual) model number,
and look for Documentation.  Get the User Manual (at least).  Read.
Look for a topic like "Use the Modem Router as a WiFi Access Point".

> [...] I have tried to access the router to change the settings but I

What, exactly, did you connect to what, exactly?  (Hint: If a device
has different types of ports, then "connected to device" is not enough
detail.)  Did you do anything special to configure the D7000[vX]?

"can't" is not a useful problem description.  It does not say what
you did.  It does not say what happened when you did it.  As usual,
showing actual actions (commands) with their actual results (error
messages, LED indicators, ...) can be more helpful than vague
descriptions or interpretations.

> [...] I have tried routerlogin.net and 198.162.1.1 [...]

"tried" with what connected to what?  What did "routerlogin.net" do
for you?  If the D7000[vX] is still configured as a (modem+)router,
then, as its User Manual says, its default LAN IP address should be
"198.162.0.1".

> [...] Can anyone help me access the router [...]

Someone who knows what you're doing (and trying to do) might have a
chance.

> [...] does it have to be connected to the internet? [...]

   No.

> [...] I have just got it connected to the computer via an ethernet
> cable at the moment. [...]

"via an ethernet cable" to what?  One of its LAN Ethernet ports?
That's the only connection to the D7000[vX]?  What's the IP address
of your (unspecified) "the computer"?  If it's "198.162.0.x", then try
pointing a web browser at "198.162.0.1".

If you configure the D7000[vX] as a WAP, then it should, by default,
get a new LAN IP address from your (unspecified) main router, using
DHCP.  When that happens, you'll need to ask your (unspecified) main
router about the devices which are connected to it to learn the new LAN
IP address of the D7000[vX]-as-WAP.  Most likely, you'll want to reserve
a particular address for the D7000[vX]-as-WAP (on the main router), so
that it will always get the same address, and you won't need to hunt for
it every time you want to talk to the thing.

It sounds intimidating but in reality it isn't that hard.

If this is Vodafone in the UK, they love supply "free" routers that are actually modem/routers. And they follow BT's example and make it impossible to turn off the router bit.

You said you wanted to create "a wired hub".

The easiest way to do what you want is to turn the D7000 into a wireless access point wired back to your main router. One thing you can't do easily is to create a wifi link between the Vodafone thingy and your D7000.

Visit the support pages:

Support | NETGEAR

Feed in your model number and check the documentation for your hardware.

Check the section in the manual Use the Modem Router as a WiFi Access Point.

Set the thing up before you add it to the network. As @thehypnootoad says, it can help to reset the D6400, especially if you run into problems.
