Can not remote manage WNDR4500

I have enabled remote management, the 'Everyone' option is selected, and I chose port 8080, the same as I used to remote manage my DLink DIR-655 router that I replaced with the 4500. When I attempt to connect via the required 'https' address with the appended ':8080', I get the following error every time in Firefox 9 beta:

SSL received a record that exceeded the maximum permissible length.

(Error code: ssl_error_rx_record_too_long)

In IE 8, the page simply times out without ever loading. I know the router is on and working at the moment because I added a port forward in the router to my VoIP PAP box that I use for SIP that goes to its administration page, and that opens without any problem.

Anyone have a similar experience, or suggestions to fix? Thank you.

Re: Can not remote manage WNDR4500

UPDATE:
The router can be reached without error through my Android phone's built-in browser, but not by the afore-mentioned PC browsers.

Re: Can not remote manage WNDR4500

The router can be reached without error through my Android phone's built-in browser,

assume you tested from the Cell Data and not wifi?

8080 should be default ports for the netgear router so should if you are using Cell Data to reach.

try not o reach from LAN side with PC using exteneral (WAN IP):8080, this will fail been loopback while you should still able to connect via private ip (192.x)

Re: Can not remote manage WNDR4500

Thank you. Yes, it works properly from my phone from anywhere...It's using cell data plan, not the LAN.

So again, the error occurs using Firefox from a remote PC, or no error, but no web page from IE. According to various sites, the issue is one of either the router responding with non-ssl responses (as if it were http) rather than with SSL as the browser expects being the required protocol according to Netgear is https, or the SSL certificate is wrong.

Re: Can not remote manage WNDR4500

UPDATE:
When I connect to the router using my Android phone's web browser, it does get a security warning: "There are problems with the security certificate for this site. The name of the site does not match the name on the certificate."

I looked at the certificate. The fields for Issued To: are all blank except for 'Organization: Internet Widgets Pty Ltd'. Issued by is also all blank except the exact same field which has the same 'Internet Widgets' entry.

Done. Went back and forth in email through the support site. They finally, supposedly, say they understand what I'm talking about and advised me to call them. I call them, I'm transferred to a level (something above 1) who promptly disconnects me after on hold for 25 minutes.

I have the same issue. I can access from the LAN side but not WAN. I did however connect using Safari on my iPhone.

Re: Can not remote manage WNDR4500

I think this is an HTTPS issue rooted in a bad security certificate. If Netgear would enable remote access just by HTTP, I bet the problem goes away.

Can anyone access this remotely? If so, please share...

Re: Can not remote manage WNDR4500

Port 8080?

Mine ain't 8080. See the SETUP for remote management and use the port it tells you to use.

Re: Can not remote manage WNDR4500

I used the address listed on the Remote Management tab. No manual port change. Port is not 8080. Tested and works with PCs and even my iPhone.

Re: Can not remote manage WNDR4500

Using Safari on my iPhone, the port was set to 8433 to see if that helped. Then on my desktop PC at work I tried to access the router.

I get this:

This webpage is not available
Error 111 (net::ERR_TUNNEL_CONNECTION_FAILED): Unknown error.

Netgear support could not fix the situation. I'm still convinced this has to do with the HTTPS hard-coded into the router's remote access settings. The S denotes a secure-type conncetion which means there must be a security certificte in place.

Re: Can not remote manage WNDR4500

I enabled remote management and it worked fine using the WAN IP address with port 8443 (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:8443).

However, when Security Metrics scanned my WAN IP for vulnerabilities (every business that takes credit cards must have this scan done), port 8443 returned "SSL Certificate Cannot be Trusted" errors from the router.

How can I use Remote Management of the router forcing HTTPS, or is there a way to authenticate the remote management session or install a SSL Certificate in the router so that port 8443 isn't vulnerable to attack?

Re: Can not remote manage WNDR4500

Most netgear home end router do not support HTTPS so suggest to disable the remote management.

Other manufacture may support https but netgear doesn't unless you go netgear prosafe/prosecure unnits

Re: Can not remote manage WNDR4500

I am also having remote manangement connectivity issues, among other issues with the WNDR4500. Netgear support has been lackluster and I think they refuse to address the problems and defects their routers experience.
