Can't connect to the 5GHZ band?

Aloha, I just bought this R6200 on Monday. I am not a PC guru by any means. I set everything up, new admin password, new network name and password. For all of my wireless devices(wireless laptops, iPhones, and iPad), it shows both bands available. But for some reason I can't log on/connect to the 5GHZ band. Any suggestions?

Re: Can't connect to the 5GHZ band?

Strangely enough, both of my iPhones, iPad and laptops recognize both channels. On my previous router(Dlink DIR-855), I have connected my iPhones and laptops on either channel.

Now how do I know what channel I am connected to? On my previous router, the 2.5Ghz channel was named blahblah and the 5Ghz channel was blahblah2. Every once in a while I would check which one I was on. The device would show which one it was connected to, either blahblah or blahblah2.

I didn't have time to check what my gaming systems are usually connected to, didn't have much time that night.

Re: Can't connect to the 5GHZ band?

So renaming both channels/SSIDs is the reason why I can't connect to the 5Ghz channel?

Re: Can't connect to the 5GHZ band?

You can still connect both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz one a time and setup but for you to choose by looking at both band SSIDN name ex. NETGEAR, NO

Re: Can't connect to the 5GHZ band?

I ended up messing with 3 laptops and an iPhone last hight. All of these devices recognizes both channels, blahblah(2.4Ghz) and blahblah2(5Ghz). All of these devices easily connects to 2.4Ghz channel. None of these devices will connect to the 5Ghz channel.

The next thing I will try, is probably doing a reset and start from scratch. Rename both channels but leaving it as an unsecured network. If I still can't connect to the 5Ghz channel then I will have to take it back. IMO if I my devices recognizes the channel but cant connect to it, then my basic reasoning is I have a bad unit.

IF that what you are using for SSID then both band should able to connect at will.

You may just simply have defective unitSmiley Happy

Re: Can't connect to the 5GHZ band?

Hi one3boost,

If you are not already, configure your R6300 under Wireless Setup > Security Options for WPA2-PSK [AES] and configure your devices for that too.

I find with Android that it will choose 2.4GHz over 5GHz (I name them separately). For battery devices this is generally a good thing.

This sounds like my same problem. Did you conclude it was a bad unit?
